How do you call your tacks/gybes?

But I still bet you look around at all the crew positions in sight to check readiness before action at the helm. I trust my crew but their safety is still in my hands. ;) "Helms Down"
Oh for sure.

Using positive acknowledgement from every crewmember is hard because now the skipper has to keep track of who he has heard from. Most programs now use the inverse model, where as crew you say nothing after the 'tack in x seconds' warning and that means you are going to be ready. If for some reason you cannot, you say HOLD. And you sort it out fast.
That makes sense.... when I'm skipper I only want to hear from the trimmer ... actually, I just want to make sure everyone's awake heh, heh...
Seriously, though... I think I'll give your system a try... it's more of a "warning" rather than a "preparation" command when you add a time limit. I like it.

Yepper, and the nice part is that everyone knows how long their role takes to prep. On a 30 second call nobody moves for a while, but some might prep where there are. The trimmer who will break moves first. If you don't have an active job, you stay on the rail the longest and hike even harder as weight leaves the rail.

me: We're gonna run outta lake if we don't turn this rig around.
wife: You mean I have to move? I just got settled in.
me: Here we go! Hey, you're on the line...can you move?
wife: Okay, how's that?
me: You're still on it. If I yank it now, you're gonna get a rope burn on your $%#@. Move some more.
wife: Sigh...there, how 'bout now?
me: Great. Sailing is hard work, isn't it?
wife: Can you hand me my blanket?
Wonderful....LMAO! This is exactly how it works when my buddy and I sail with our wives. On our last cruise in the BVIs my wife proclaimed that her spot in the cockpit was "the seat of no responsibility." And it was.

I guess I've always been a little different but it's close enough that it has worked for years...

Ready about! Ready! Coming about.
or
Prepare to Jibe! Ready! Jibing.

It all depends. I don't race my boat (still gotta find a ride one of these days) - and it's typically a bunch of newbies on my boat anyway.

But out of habit, it's mostly "Prepare to tack!" and "Helmsalee!" (Or sometimes "Helm's named lee"). "Prepare to gybe" and "Gybe-ho." If somebody is actually learning on the boat it'll get a lot more complex as in what to do with the helm and sails and whatnot. "Tacking..." and "Gybing..." also works.

We use gybe only when running downwind. We use tack only when reaching (going upwind)
Never used gybe upwind because it confuses the required action. Ready to tack? tacking. Ready to gybe? Watch out for the flying boom! Gybe ho! Upwind we also use Ready to come about? (upwind) After confirmation fro crew, COMING ABOUT!

When I racing "Prepare to Tack". "Tack". It is all about Communicating with the crew.

When I'm sailing solo it is a bit more complicated. "We could tack. Sure we could. There's a puff over there. Where. Let's tack. Let's not and enjoy the silence. But the reef. Yea I know it's off to port. Let's tack. But if we hold we can tack and make it all the way past the headland. That's 5 miles away. There's no way. Sure this time. Never. Oh hell I'll get up. You sure should. Ok let go the sheet. Helms over. Grind that sheet. Move the seat cushion. Did you check if there were any other boats. Sure clear. Settle down on the Lee. All done. That was a lot of work."
Sometimes I win the discussion sometimes I don't. It is a 50 50 record.
Sometimes a mind is an ok thing to waste...

"Ok, we gotta go, cuz this tactic of ducking that guy real close is starting to bug me and one day that inch and a half isn't gonna be there."
