How Do You Adjust a KBW10 Tranmission?

We're pulling our Kanzaki KBW10 transmission and shipping it off to be rebuilt. The unit seems to shift well and run smoothly, but the ATF turns black and smells burnt after just 40 or 50 hours of operation. We've also noticed that it seems we've lost a knot of boat speed at cruise RPM. So I'm pretty sure the clutches are slipping. I've read a few comments about it being important to maintain the adjustment on the shift mechanism to keep the unit from slipping, but I have no idea what this adjustment consists of. There seems to be a positive "click" from the shift lever on the transmission when shifting to forward or reverse, so I assume the unit is properly engaging. What are you supposed to do to "adjust" this transmission shifter?

Robert, here is a section of the KBW 10 shop manual.. I don't think that adjustment is a "normal" service item, since once it is set, it is supposed to stay that way.. Items 3.3 talks about not messing with it.. 6.6 talks about how to set it after a rebuild.. Good Luck with it !

Hello I dont have any information that could help you but I was wondering if I could piggy back your question to ask you if you could show me how your gear selector linkage works as I am installing a yanmar with this transmission from a perkins and just wondering what your setup is

I also have the KBW10. The transmission engages in forward or reverse with just 35mm of travel measured at the outermost hole on the lever either side of neutral. It is permissible to have overtravel of the shift lever without affecting anything. The lever can probably be rotated by loosening the clamp bolt to obtain alignment with your shift cable. No other external adjustment should be required. If you feel it drop into gear, there is no more that can be done with the shifter linkage.

I have the KBW10 in a Pacific Seacraft Pilothouse with two control stations. I just finished removing the transmission, completing an inspection via the side cover. We found the notch, cam, groove and shift fork. We cleaned those up, smoothed them out and reassembled. Hand operation of the external arm was smoother. After reinstalling and testing at both stations I found that my aft station does not offer as much travel as the forward station. I will be checking the measurement of cable travel and doing what I can to maximize it to guidelines. This seems to be a mechanical clutch system in that the more travel you can get applies more pressure on the discs. I had thought that when I heard the click it was engaged and all was good. I do not have that opinion any longer. Just my 2 cents here but if it is simply adjusting the cable and/or external arm that is much better than a rebuild or clutch pack, etc. I also have split controls in that the throttle and shift are separate. Reading the installation instructions it suggests a single lever control, part of me thinks that could contribute to getting more complete travel than the split that I have.

The burnt oil seems to indicate slipping clutch disks, not the gear wheels.
