Blew out the very old headsail and need to replace it. How do I get it off the furler?

Generally, you need to release the halyard tha t holds the sail up on the furler. On some furlers, you have an external halyard (you should be able to see it attached to the top of the Genoa, to the mast. Location on the mast depends on if you have a mast head rig, or a fractional rig.

On other furlers, like mine, the sail is held in place by a wire halyard in the furler. On mine, I have a metal "slug" that is attached to one end of the wire halyard, and as I raise the sail, I pull down the slug. Once the sail is in place, the slug is "pinned" in place with a cotter pin. The slug is pinned a foot or so from the bottom of the furler.

Knowing what sort of furler you have would help immensely. But these the options should give you some good clues where to start.

I can't find anything on that unit.

Do you know if you raise the sail with an external halyard?

We have to assume a few things. You know the halyard that controls the Genoa. You have enough of the sail left to pull it down. You know how to release (unwind) the furled sail.
If you can do these things your 75% there.

Collect the sheets onto to fore deck. Unwind the furled sail on a day when no wind is blowing. Release the Genoa halyard. Move to the furler and pull the sail sail down to the deck collecting the sail at your feet as you go. Be sure the halyard is not tangled. Might want to have a helper control the line and let it up as you pull the sail down. Do not let the halyard wrap and get pulled up the mast. They are no fun trying to catch and fish them down.
Once the sail is down, disconnect the head and tack from the furler. You'll have to give us a photo or explain the connection if you need more help.

I have a North furler of around the same vintage.
Unfurl the sail, release the halyard, pull down on the sail - the boltrope should still be intact inside the furler even if most of the sail is gone.

Thanks for the help. Took it off today, much easier than I expected.

Congrats. Most of sailing seems more difficult than it really is.
Until it isn't...:)
