I found the issue. The first picture shows a drain that is broken but can still be used with a screwdriver. I thought it was the same as mine but mine still has a small knurled knob at the end (see below). Since that was too stiff, I did use a screwdriver to crack it loose and then you can turn it via the knurled knob. I was nervous about it since I was used to seeing the type you show above but all is good for now!
