I have a 1983 Hunter 30. I have just purchased a new hot water heater with a heat exchanger. My problem is how do I get the old one out. It is not the original and it does not have a heat exchanger. I just can see how to get the thing out. It looks like a job for Harry Potter.

Russ, If it's under the dining seat forward of the galley, as mine is on the Hunter 33.5, you have to remove the entire dining seat assembly as one unit. The trick is locating ALL of the screws. One or more screws were in the cubby next to the hull. After all screws are removed, the unit just lifts out and you can stand ti on end in the main salon aisle. There are only a few screws (about 4) holding the water heater down to the plywood sub deck. If it didn't have a heat exchanger in the old heater, you will have to run two water (heavy wall) hoses, one from engine cooling to the heater and one return from the heater back to the engine. Study the best route for these 2 hoses. Of course you have to disconnect the pluming water in and hot water out lines.

RE: removing hot water heater

Russ, on my 75H30, my water heater is aft of the fuel tank under the starboard cockpit seat. That places it near the storage storage hatch. Assuming it is similiar to mine, I would try removing it through there. Another thought would be through the port quarter bunk, after opening it up for engine access.

I have an 83 H30 and mine was under the cockpit sole. I ended up cutting all of the fittings off and then cutting the casing apart. The tank came out in one piece. I'm not sure it was original, but by looking at the amount of rust I believe it was. It took a lot of hard work, and hanging upside down in the lazzarette, but I got it. I mounted the new one in the lazzarette and am thinking about mounting the batteries under the cockpit sole. If I didn't have to get at the prop shaft, or the steering parts, I would move them right away.

My 79h30 water heater rusted out 20 yrs ago and would not fit through the cockpit locker or over the engine due to size restrictions on both. I had to cut the old heater apart, down to the tank and got it out in pieces.

The new heater is square and would also not fit in either of the obvious openings. I had to cut a notch out of the floor of the cockpit locker, inboard, enough for the heater to be slid across the engine and into the locker. I then had to re-glass the cut out so that the heater will come out again without cutting.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Wow

Worse than I thought. I guess I will replace mine before I rebuild the cabinets and fuel tank. Russ, what are your plans.
