Thanks for the picture. When I bought the boat (one year ago) the old owner told me they were having trouble with center board so they had it bolted up. What ever that means. Well it has fallen down. It is in the water now. I only see ropes on deck, with two pullies. I do have the post in the main salon. So to fix this I guess I will have to run a new cable down and shackle it to board. Is that right? Is the cable spliced to a rope? Since there is no cable on the deck, just rope? Again thanks for your help. Jim Manna

Try Rudy
Reasons - I have an O'Day 23 with a center board and replaced the line which lowers it. It was originally steel and line but I replaced with a line only. Give Rudy at D&R a call at (508) 644-3001 - He can give you the details of the right line and cal seel you the replacement. http://www.drmarine.com/ If the boat is in the water you will have to dive to place the line on the center boaord and then use something to lead the line up into the cockpit or where-ever it attaches. The thimble on the end of the line will not go down the hole. Enjoy the boat James

If the boat is in the water and a diver is able to tie on a strong twine to the old pendant line where it comes out of the centerboard slot, you could pull the twine up into the cockpit or cabin and tie it off temporarily. Then, all the diver has to do is hook the end of the new pendant line to the twine so that you can pull it up. If there is no line in it at all, I don't see why you couldn't use an electrician's fish wire from up above, and have him tie on to that. Rudy can set you up with a pendant line with the centerboard shackel already on it. Joe

replaced mine on my 222 last year. called Rudi and ordered one. had the yard haul and leave in sling for short term. I had the job done in less than an hour and was back in the slip. no where as bad a job as I had feared.

Centerboard pendant line reply
That's the easiest way to do it, Larry. I just recently took my centerboard completely out of my 222 so that I can bottom paint the board, and the inside of the keel slot. My boat is on stands in my yard with the keel exposed. The bottom paint that I ordered a few weeks ago hasn't arrived yet. My pendant line and shackle are still in excellent condition. So I'm not going to bother to change it. It'll probably be good for three more years. If it gets a little warmer this week, I'm going to lightly sand the hull bottom and build a shelf behind my galley cabinet, in the opening of my bulkhead. Then I need to add the finishing touches to my new sink/stove counter top. Every year I manage to do some kind of modifications to this boat. It's no longer a stock 222 anymore. I can truly say that it's been fun to work on. Joe

Jim, If you have a winch with a cable on the table pedistal to operate your centerboard, you may be able to get away with braid line if your centerboard is made of fiberglass. Some of the older O'Day 25s like the 1975 O'Day Keel centerboard that I delivered about five years, had the same arrangement with steel cable. The centerboard was stuck in the up position and we went under it and freed it with an old saw blade. I remember moving the centerboard underwater and it appeared to be very light and made of fiberglass. I'm pretty sure that the guy talked to Rudy about replacing the wire cable and Rudy told him that it was permissable to use braid line with a centerboard shackle. I'm not familiar with the O'Day 30s, but if you call Rudy I'm sure that he will get you exactly what you need and send it to you. Joe

Rudy Nickerson used to work for O'Day in Fall River, and bought all the molds and stock from them when they went out of business. He's located in Assonet Ma., and works out of his barn next to his house. He should have what you need to do the job. It's a pretty easy job and involves getting the line up through the keel slot and into the cabin. Then, all your diver has to do is attach the centerboard shackle to the centerboard. There's a small hole in the trailing edge of your centerboard where the shackle pin goes through, and the cotter pin holds it on. If there is nothing to attach the new pendant line to, I don't see why you can't use an electrician's fishing wire from the cabin and attach a strong pulling twin to it under the keel. He could attach the end of the pendant line to the twine. Put a long twine on it, and you can attach it while sitting in the cockpit. When I did mine, I bought the line and shackle off Rudy and made my own braid splice to the shackle. Then I used whipping twine to whip the end of the pendant line. I used one of my large sail needles along with the leather palm and pushed the needle through the braid in back of the whipping and tied a small bowline through the braid from the pulling twine to get it up through.
