I have an 81' H30 and I would like to check my compression post. I believe it is inside the decorative post on the bulkhead under the mast. How do I remove the decorative part? What am I looking for? Should I be checking anything else? Your help is appreciated! Thanks! Fred

You're on the right track

The compression post is located right were you think it is. If you start on the head side of the post you can remove all the bungs & then the screws to remove the trim. The compression post on our 79 H30 is a nice straight grain douglas fir and was in perfect condition. Recently there have been posts here where people found their compression posts were toast. Search the archives, there are some pictures that will curl your toes. You should also have a look at the I Beam or T beam that is in the bilge. Ours was a I Beam that had rust flaking off it. We went to a local metal fabricator & got a new piece of I Beam for about $25.00. And Yes, you have to step the mast if you are removing the compression post IMHO. Have fun !!

Why do you want to check it?

Fred: Why do you you want to check your compression post? The Cherubini's had very few problems with the upper section. You can inspect the bottom and typically see if there are any problems. The 'I' beam is the most problematic area in these boats to worry about. When our H'31 started having problem it was obvious. The head door (different than yours) would not close. There was also evedience of water intrusion in the bulkhead. Basically what I am telling you is that I would not bust that baby open unless there are obvious signs. Start in the bilge and if you see problems you may want to dig deeper.

Thanks guys!

Thanks for your responses. I have npo signs of trouble right now, but after reading the threads and seeing some of the photos, it made me think I should check it out. I will check the beam in the bilge. I know that the cabin top is firm, so I don't think there is any serious issues right now. I just didn't know if checking the post was part of periodic maintenance like checking zincs or changing oil. Thanks again!
