How do I add a windlass to my Hunter 37C

I would like to add a windlass to my 1982 Hunter 37C but would like to try to use the existing chain locker without going into space below . Is there a solution to this shallow locker for mounting a windlass? I am thinking of using a Lewmar 900 horizontal.Mike

That'll work

Check the photo forum - the link "windlass installation" on the H37C page at this site will take you to it. I did the same thing, but with a Simpson Lawrence Horizon 1500. Works great. The bottom of the anchor locker is cored with plywood - plenty strong, but pay attention to sealing the core properly when you cut holes in it. I just use the space directly below as the chain locker - I have 25 fathom of 3/8" chain in there with no problem. If you use this space, you will have to do a little glass work to keep water from the anchor chain contained and away from the forepeak cushions. Alternately, use the next compartment down, as Ed Schenck did (see other photo post on same page). I really like having the windlass down out of the weather and it looks better too.

Jim was refering to my Photo Forum item named "H37C Hawse Pipe". Click on Related Link below. Our anchor lockers are really quite roomy. Especially once you get the chain below the locker.I agree with Jim, I like a clean deck. But I have also seen them mounted behind the mid-stay. Not sure how you get the chain to the locker in that event. It would almost have to be a vertical I guess. If you can find the "Rainbow Chaser" H37C website you will see that Gene built a bow pulpit and mounted his windlass forward of the locker. Windlass installation

Mike, I installed a lofrans low profile on my 37c. In installed the windlass on the front half of the anchor locker hatch. I braced the hatch underneath with an aluminum plate. The chain rope drops through the bottom of the anchor locker. I carry 70/ of chain and 250 ft of rope. My boat is in channel islands harbor on I dock...feel free to take a look.
