How do I add a holding tank?

My newly purchased 1974 O'Day 27 obviously is not regulation compliant. I was under the impression that the holding tank must be lower than the head for efficient flushing. However, I was recently told that this is not true. My boat has an empty cabinet behind the head. In that cabinet, is the sewer loop (I believe this is above water level of the boat) which is approximately level with the top of the toilet. Is it possible to install a holding tank in the bottom of this cabinet and install a diverter valve to allow suctioning out nearshore and dumping offshore? The cabinet is in the curvature of the hull, so I can't imagine any rectangular off-the-shelf tank fitting. Is it possible to build a fiberglass (or some other material) tank to fit the space, and if so, how high above the level of the head is safe for effective flushing? This cabinet is the largest storage area, my primary concern is about its elevation above the toilet. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks for your assistance. JimC

A marine toilet that's working to specs...

...can lift several feet--and often has to, because the discharge should go up and over and vented loop that's at least 1' above the waterline at any angle of heel. So unless you plan to put a holding tank on deck :), you shouldn't have any problems if the tank inlet is above the toilet...in fact, that's the case in 99% of installations. I suggest you read the articles in the Head Mistress forum library before starting this project. And as for a non-rectangular tank, we can help you with that...we offer nearly 400 different shapes and sizes, of which at least 100 are non-rectangular. Send me an e-mail (peghall@bellsouth.net) with your snail address and I'll send you a catalog.
