How difficult is it to pull injectors?

My generator (Northern Lights) has black smoke coming out of the exhaust. I have had some problems with trash and algae in the fuel and have been told that there is a good probability that the injectors may need to be cleaned or rebuilt. The engine has 600 hours and runs fine otherwise. I am considering taking them out myself and wondering if there is anything particularly tricky about it, or if there is any reason I should get a mechanic to do this instead. Once I pulled them, I would take them to a shop for testing. thanks!

easy

it's more complicated to re-install them properly and if you are not sure how, putting them back in might warrant a professional to show you how. Removing them is pretty straight-forward, just don't kink the feed line(s). This brings up a question for you - presuming it's the same fuel tank from which your engine draws, why just the genset?

Have you tried using injector cleaner

in a heavy dose? When we redo our fuel filters every year, we fill the new cannister up with injector cleaner to reuse the amount of air in the system and reduce bleeding issues. That puts a healthy chunk of injector cleaner through them when the engine fires up and also pushes back what is unused through the fuel return lines to the tank. Otherwise, Don's right on the nose with his answer.

Not hard

Not hard at all, one of mine was leaking. Used Deep sockets but normal wrenches will usually work fine. I did a search for companies that rebuilt injectors around Dallas. Came up with three. They came back like new. I asked all of the questions I could think of at the rebuild shop and they went in fine. I paid $35. each.

good question...

about the engine not having a problem...I was wondering the same thing... maybe the genset filters didn't work as well, maybe the Yanmar injectors are less susceptible to problems, the gen possibly had more hours with the bad fuel, etc. Injectors on the genset are due to be checked anyway.

Great idea, Stu...

...I cannot easily get fuel from my tank to refill the filter cannister. I'm gonna use that one from now on. Tom s/v Orion's Child
