Will you buy me this boat daddy, please!!!

Ok so we were at the Newport RI boat show a few years back and took the time to admire some of the large 45+ foot power boats. I was sitting at the wheel when my then 4 year old daughter came over, climbed on my lap, gave me a kiss on the cheek and asked "will you by me this boat daddy, please"? When we did buy our 376 we named her "ALLIE KAT" after my daughter, Alexandra Kathrine. God help the man who marries my little girl in 30+ years (and thats when I'll let her start dating) Russell S/V Allie Kat

What's in a name

My first big boat was a Hunter legend 37.5. I got a book on naming boats and one of its suggestions was song title. There were no titles that I liked so I started think about the words. I wanted something that was up beat and the song Song of the South came to mind. So I name her Zippidee. Yes, it is spelled wrong. My girlfriend did not really like the name but it was much better than any of the others I had been thinking of. So time passes and the girlfriend becomes my wife, we start thinking of retiring and go sailing. At the St Petersburg boat show last year we are looking a new boats. Marilyn says that, if we are going to be living on a boat for 3 or 4 years, she would like one that one did not have to crawl over the other to get out of the bed. Well, Passage 420 here we come. New boat new name. So it is her chance to come up with a name. My suggestion was Zippidee Du. She liked it. It was after this we were at Disney World and found out that I had spelled it wrong. Are we going to change it NO! The salesmen David asks if the next boat would be names Zippidee Du Da, do not know. Could be. If you would like to see some pictures of the boat, go to sailboatsflorida.com/du Bob & Marilyn Petersen Zippidee Du

Top Secret

Top Secret is the name so I can't tell you. But I will compromise. Lacking "Ms. Julia's Money", if you will "Zippide Du" money to me, I'll tell you. Jim Bohart knew why the boat was named Top Secret, but he forgot!

Angels' Grace

I bought my first sailboat shortly after my wife passed away. When I was trying to think of a name to honor her memory Angels' Grace came to me while walking on the beach. I just bought my second boat and kept the name Charlie Gruetzner S/V Angels' Grace

Roll the Dice

I bought my Cat 27 with the proceeds from an investment club, appropriately named. Considering the market today, it was a very wise decision!

No choice really

I purchased my O'Day 23 in the fall after she had been put on the hard for the season. Her name, "Biloxi Blues," and homeport where painted on the stern. I sort of liked the name, but figured I had the whole winter to come up with a new name if I decided to make the effort of removing the existing lettering. Anyway, my wife threw me a surprise 40th birthday party in the spring (before I had come to any decision on renaming the boat). Many of my gifts were clothing and gear with the name "Biloxi Blues" emblazoned upon them. I have since become quite the believer in the tradition of never changing the name of a boat in order to avoid angering the Gods (and wives and friends).

GARRY @ S/V TASHTEGO

TASHTEGO

When I bought her I changed her name to TASHTEGO. Tashtego was one of the three harpooneers on PEQUOD, the whaling ship in Moby Dick (along with Queequeg and Daggoo). He was a Wampanoag indian from Martha's Vinyard and I always liked the name. I found the Wampanoag web site and sent them a query asking whether Tashtego was named after a real person but they never answered. Anyway, its a salty name and a lot better than the previous one.

A cure for all ills

An Anodyne is a magical cure, a copper bracelet, or a poultice worn round the neck. What better name for a sailboat that cures your ills! Also, there is a pub in England called the Anodyne Necklace. A place special to my wife and I. What better name for a pub or a boat!

Boat named after my cat...

Boats are referred to as *she*. My beloved black cat is a female named Chloe. The name seemed to fit the boat, too. I didn't want to do some cutesy name with a nautical theme (like Knot-A-Clew) or an name derived from the social aspects of yachting (Monkey Business?). I did have a co-owned powerboat at one time named Nau-Sea (naw-see). It was taken from a Flintstones episode where Fred and Barney buy a boat together. One wants to name it (names from memory) Nautical Lady and the other wants Sea Queen. They split the difference (NAUSEA), until Wilma tells them that *nausea* is not an appropriate name for a boat <g>.

"Just For Giggles"

It's why I bought the boat and why I sail her. The dinghy is "Squiggles" which kind of describes an air floor inflatable. So it's Giggles and Squiggles. Kent & Angela S/V Giggles (Hunter 320)

Amitié

We got a boat 24 years ago which we named Friendship. She was a classic old design with lots of wood. We loved the boat but it got too small for our family so we sold it last year. When it came time to name our new Catalina we knew it could never be a Friendship. My son who was taking French at the time said what about the French word for Friendship. We took one look at the word Amitié and we knew we had found our new boat name. Happy Sailling Rich & Paula Lemieux Amitié C-36 1621

Knot Again

As Peggy said, some boats name themselves. As I was negotiating with my wife to step up from our H336 to our H380, her response was "Not again!". As we were closing the deal and signing all the paperwork, she looked at me and said "We are not ever doing this again". Hence the name Knot Again.

Kobold Goldemar

A kolbold is a mythical figure from German folklore and is something like the leprechauns of the Irish. That is, they do mischievous things occasionally. Goldemar is the name of one of these kolbolds. He has a special job: keeping track of the secret sins of the clergy. The Rev. Marvin D. Otto Kobold Goldemar

felt right

We named our boat 'SYZYGY' because it felt right... a little thing called 'feng shui' whose written charaters stand for 'wind' and 'water' deals with what 'feels right'....it's not about logic - boats are referred to in feminine gender because they belong to the gender which is neurologically superior :>), [hey, that's what the medical experts say...I'm just quoting,] thus we are talking 'feel' here...and 'SYZYGY' felt right..[BTW syzygy is the alignment of three or more planetary bodies within the same gravitational field...]

Phil: Essay Questions!

Phil, Didn't you ever hear of essay questions when you were in school? I defy you to get Syzygy, Kobold Goldemar, and Tako Kichi into a multiple choice format :) Seriously, there have been some wonderful stories in this thread. Since you didn't ask, Shibumi comes from a book of the same name written by Trevanian. It's too complicated to explain so I'll quote: " Shibumi has to do with great refinement underlying commonplace appearances. It is a statement so correct it does not have to be bold, so poignant, it does not have to be pretty, so true it does not have to be real. Shibumi is understanding rather than knowledge. Eloquent silence. In demeanor it is modesty without pudency. In art . . .it is elegant simplicity, articulate brevity. In philosophy . . . it is spiritual tranquillity that is not passive; it is being without the angst of becoming. And in the personality of a man, it is . . .how does one say it? Authority without domination? Something like that.". . . "How does one achieve this shibumi, sir?" "One does not achieve it, one . . . discovers it. And only a few men of infinite refinement ever do that." "Meaning that one must learn a great deal to arrive at shibumi?" "Meaning, rather, that one must pass through knowledge and arrive at simplicity." Heavy, huh, but we think it's kind of neat. Gary Wyngarden s/v Shibumi H335
