how come my boat is lighter than most???

its a santana 27'
its got a thicker hull (single layer not cored) than any I've seen,its got a bigger keel than most (2300#),its wider than most (9' beam) it just seems like a a heavier made boat but it only weighs 5000#.
most of the others are 6000 to 7000# range what am i missing

Just a guess, but I imagine an inboard engine would account for some more weight, though I'm not sure how much. A quick glance at your boat online doesn't seem to have an inboard.

Are you refering to other 27 footers? I have a chrysler 26 ,8' beam,1800# swing keel,also solid hull,very thick and it displaces 5000#,a dock mate has a 7.6 meter columbia that has a 9'2" beam and displaces 4500#.I guess i just am not sure what you are comparing your boat with.

Boats are generally sized by length, instead of displacement. I guess is a marketing thing as some boats could not be farther from others named similar in size. Then you have different ways of measuring length; length of waterline, length of top deck, bowsprit to sugar scoop transom, etc. Some 27 footers are larger than some 30 footers. I somewhat find that displacement somehow describes a boat better in its ability to carry more weight, to farther points in a more comfortable way.

Defining a boat by length or weight or beam is as meaningless as defining a woman by height, or weight or beam. I have a friend who was once a reporter for the Sun papers and she said that she was the same height and weight as a local stripper that was in the news. But she complained that she didn't in any other way resemble the stripper who was about 30 years younger and had a much different hull shape. BUT they were both the same length and displacement.

and no on the inboard but i keep a 3hp Evinrude in the trunk just in case the other propulsion system fails
