How can I get a copy of the CD?

Aloha kakou,

I have received quite a lot of questions like this from members and
non-members alike.

I had planned to make the CD available only to active members of
AVA. I was thinking that current AVA members would be allowed to
purchase the CD at or near the actual cost of producing and mailing
(Haven't worked that out just yet but expect to have the number by
Monday), and to include it in the new member packet in lieu of the
printed VORM. This would reduce the cost of new memberships to the
Assn. while giving more value to the new member with the additional
material included on the CD. The material on the CD was originally
compiled by and for AVA members and, speaking of the VORM at least,
as an incentive to join. Still, now that you mention it, I am of
the opinion that some arrangement should be made to accommodate
members of our sister organizations such as VODA, VAGB, Kring van
Vega Zeilers etc.

Perhaps now is the time to pose a few questions to the group.

Since the printed version of the VORM costs me over $15 to print and
mail, I lose money every time I sign up a new member. I propose to
replace the printed VORM with the CD in the new member packet and
raise the price of new memberships to $20 to $25. New members would
receive the CD containing new, expanded VROM, all issues of the
newsletter published since August 2000 and the photo album plus the
subscription to Fair Winds (And this year there WILL be six issues
published)

Questions: Do you think that this represents a good value for a new
member?
Is the proposed fee appropriate?
If not, what would you consider an appropriate amount?

I had thought to offer the CD to current members at or near the true
cost of producing and mailing the CD, probably somewhere between $5
and $10.

Question: What do you think would be a fair price, one that
represents a good value, for members?

Question: Should the CD be offered to members of affilliate
organizations and if so what would be an appropriate price, not
including postage?

Question: Should the CD be offered to non-members and if so what
would be an appropriate price, not including postage?

Those of you who are not yet members of AVA please feel free to
respond and give your input, especially as pertains to the new member
fee. Bear in mind of course that more weight will be given to the
opinions of current AVA members.

I have no desire to withhold information from my fellow VEGAtarians.
The idea is merely to make membership in the AVA more attractive and
beneficial to all (and to reduce the burden on my hobby budget).

Please kokua,

Hi Chuck

We have a similar problem in the UK with out Technical Notes, MD6A Manual
and back issues of Newsletters. We insist that the Technical Notes are only
sent to those who join (includes quite a few from the USA who have joined),
The Newsletters are available at a cost of £1 each to members or downloaded
from the Website to anyone (Last seven Newsletters only). We let the MD6A
Manual out to all comers but ask for a donation to club funds, we leave the
amount to the purchaser but if pressed I will mention £5 - £10 would be
about right as it took me over three months of night work to complete (ask
my wife!). Hope this helps in some way.

Chuck,
Thanks again for the enormous work you have put into this project, for
which you could never be compensated. I agree with your suggested
prices and policies. When in doubt in organizations as well as in
sailing, follow the KISS principle (I'm sure everyone know that means
Keep It Simple, S--). To keep it simple, why not just two prices: an
even $10 for current members (if that covers costs) and $25 for
nonmembers (which makes that person a member for a year). I'd say call
affiliate members the same as our members--just to be nice to the
international community and encourage free (or at cost) exchange of
ideas and materials. Whether you'll need to validate membership in the
sister associations or simply trust may not even be an issue worth
losing time debating or organizing the answer. And finally, if we as as
association followed Robert's Rules, I would hereby make a motion that
the prices be set at a level above costs and that the excess received is
yours. (Actually it would be fine with me if you doubled or tripled the
costs to arrive at the price.) As one who works on a computer and has
put together newsletters for groups before, I know the huge number of
hours of your time you have given to this group, and if you actually
made enough to fill your fuel tank once or have a nice dinner ashore,
that wouldn't begin to show our appreciation. So, everyone, cast your
email vote: can we "authorize" Chuck to KISS this without a lengthy
debate?

Chuck, I agree with Tom (V 1240) that keeping it simple is the way to go,
also the 1 year membership, with purchase of the CD, he proposes, is a good
idea as it will help to bring us closer to the international community.

I am in the process of purchasing my Vega. I have been so happy with the
information that I have received through this group that I plan on joining
AVA. Since I am not a current member, but will be joining soon, I don't
think the increase to $20 or $25 is too much to ask. It is very reasonable.
