How can 3 strand nylon line be softened

Does anyone have a way to soften 3 strand 1/2in. nylon anchor line which is very stiff? Also has anyone tried using double braid for anchor line? How does it work? Does it stretch enough and does the handling make up for the extra cost?

I have never tried it yet, but I have heard on more than one occasion that Downy does an excellent job of softening stiff lines.
