How best to clean sails at home?

Does anyone have a good method of cleaning the sails at home? I have tried to suspend the sails from my house to a tree, but the sails are too big and they drag on the ground. Maybe I need a bigger house? A smaller boat is out of the question..... My idea was to simply hose off the suspended sails using warm water to dissolve the salt from the season. I've also tried to lay out the sail on the lawn and using a long-handled brush and some mild detergent, clean the sails. However on the ground, they are hard to rinse and lawn debris end up on the sails. Plus, they are hard to dry. I really hate to spend $400-500 to get these sails cleaned by a loft if there is someway I can do it myself. Ideas anyone?

Here's How I Do It!

I've never washed my main but I found it easy to wash the jib in my swimming pool. You want to make sure you didn't just add a lot of chlorinator, but a little helps if you have a few stains. I hang it on my fence and hose it down to rinse it out, then let it dry. WORKS FOR ME.

DIY Sail cleaning

Hi Rich I take my sails to laundromat with large (lot's of quarters) machine. Remove any lines or sheets, use liquid soap (not too much), and non chlorine bleach. wash sailbag also. I take mine to the boat to dry. Been doing this for years, works great Good luck red

Want a Laugh??

I USED to put the sail in a 'smallish' kiddy wading pool, fill with warm water, add a bunch of Ivory washing detergent(because its mild) and stomp like the Italian grape smashers. After a while dumped the water and rinsed a few times. It did work. Sails were actually cleaner and smelled nice with no apparent harm.... Then I got older.....

Hot Tub

Just add Sail Bath and like magic clean sails. The lofts do other things with them also so every couple of years especially when they start to get old it is not a bad idea.

Power wash 'em...

My wife, the worlds best first mate, cleaned the sails today (while I was at work) using our 1200 psi power wash and a mild solution of laundry detergent and bleach. Laid them out on the driveway, sprayed them, rinsed them, left them to dry in the sun, and then flaked them into the bags. Then, she mowed the lawn and made dinner.....and no, she is not for rent.
