A recent post about how to delete one's SBO account (which subsequently vanished) reminded me of the Eagles' song, in particular the lyrics "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave". I have been a member here on SBO forums for more than twenty years and I'm not planning on leaving anytime soon, but it got me thinking: how does one delete an SBO account? I have looked, but I can't find any 'button' in the Your Account or Profile pages...

No, SBO is not Hotel California. You can check out, but parts may never leave.

Members may not delete their accounts directly. If a member wishes to have their account deleted they need to contact me, @Dave, or use the Customer Service contact form which will eventually end up on my desk. Contacting me directly will be the faster route.

When an account is deleted the member will have 2 choices about the their content, either leave their username unchanged or have me change the name to an anonymous name. If the name change is chosen the name on all content will be changed, however, the user's name may still appear in quoted content or in post's by other users. This compiles with the GDPR rules.

Another issue mentioned recently was deleting threads or posts and editing posts. Members may not delete threads once started. If user wants a thread deleted, use the "Report" button to report the thread and explain why it should be deleted.

Members may edit the title of a thread they started, but may not delete the thread. Members may delete their own posts and members may edit their own posts for 24 hours. If a member's post needs to be edited after 24 hours, use the "Report" button and explain what needs editing and why. A moderator will make the changes if warranted.
