Hot water tank won't allow water in

Hi Everyone,

Saturday afternoon we noticed that when we turned our faucet on and selected the hotwater, no water comes out of the faucet. Only when the cold water is selected. So I crawled back to the hot water tank (Seaward F1200, 11 gallon) and pulled the red and blue hoses off. Water poured out of both holes of the water tank. I had my wife turn on the water pump and water poured out of the blue hose. I then connected the blue hose to the water tank, left the red hose off, and again turned on the water pressure, pump stopped running as if pressurized. No water pressure out of the tank. Pull the blue hose off and water sprays out of the hose but it seems like water can't enter the tank, only flow out of the tank.

Two questions:
Is there a valve inside the water tank that is maybe broken?

How do you get the hose barb off of the tank on the cold/blue side? It spins around , so it is not screwed on, and it seems to have a sleeve that slides up and down.

On mine, there is a one way valve on the cold water intake (blue) that is there to prevent hot water from siphoning back into the water supply side. If this somehow got turned around or maybe it is just stuck closed, water wouldn't get into the heater.

How do you get the hose barb off of the tank on the cold/blue side? It spins around , so it is not screwed on, and it seems to have a sleeve that slides up and down.

Try pushing the whole assembly in bit while sliding the sleeve back then pulling it off, usually works. If not look for a "c" clip that might be stopping the sleeve from sliding far enough.

if you pull off the hot water outlet hose, are you not losing all water out of the tank ?

on most hw tanks the same pump drives cold water in as hot water and cold water out. so if you disconnect the hot water out hose, and the pump is still giving you cold water, the pump is OK. but on my isotherm hw tank, if i pull off the hot water outlet hose, all the water will run out of the tank. then the water pump will be trying to pump air.

On most water heaters...

The cold water inlet is at the bottom and the hot water outlet is at the top. So removing the hot water outlet hose would not cause any water loss unless the water pump were running, adding water to the tank that's pushing water out the outlet.

The water pump is pulling water out of the water tank, so it wouldn't be pumping air unless the water tank is empty. Disconnecting the cold water inlet hose from the water heater would just allow water to spill out the hose...it wouldn't affect anything the water pump is doing.

Did you try to swap hoses and reverse-flush the tank?

Thanks for your input everyone. I pulled the hose barb off of the tank where the cold water goes in. Inside it was a valve check which was stuck. I removed it and re-installed the barb onto the tank. The tank is once again getting filled.
