What's the best replacement hot water tank for a 1984 Hunter 31. Our original tank is leaking and it's time for a new one. This one looks like a regular round residential type but it has the heat exchanger. Thought about buying a regular residential one as I don't think I need the heat exchanger, but I'm not sure. The newer ones seem to be rectangular. What fits the best with the least amout of modification ? We just got this '84 H31 and are finding out the hard way that just about everything on the boat is shot. We are starting to learn the meaning of "total refit"! Thanks.

seaward is a direct replacement

Jeff: The Seaward is a direct replacement. Be sure that you get the same model. There are two models and it depends on where the hoses/electrical hook up. PS: Who did you purchase your boat from?

Not on mine

The seqward doesn't appear to be a direct replacement on mine ! Mine is round and has the drain and pressure valve towards the back of the cabinet, the heat exchanger tubes out the side toward the engine and the water in and out on the top. The plumbing is the Quest tubing that I'm having problems finding anywhere. I was able to use a galvanized iron cap to cap off the hot water side of the plumbing while hot water heator is out. If I don't find the exact hot water heater, I'll have to change all the plumbing too or try to adapt parts to the Quest plumbing that would probably invited all kinds of problems and leaks.

Quest parts are available at Home Depot

Jeff: Quest parts are available from Home Depot, Ace Hardware and the like (in our part of the country). I am wondering if your tank has already been changed out?

Quest parts not available here

I have tried Home Depot, Lowes, MFA Farm hardware, ACE etc. and have not been able to find any Quest plumbing parts. No, my tank is original and totally rusted out. It crumbled apart as I took it out. The previous owner bought the boat when it was just over a year old and has NEVER replaced anything! Even sails and all running rigging was original and all is shot. I'm leaning the meaning of "total refit"!
