Hot Water Smell

I have a 1988 Cat 27 with the typical 6 gal. 110v and engine heated round hot water heater and can not get rid of a smell in the hot water. The cold water side is fine. I would describe the smell of the water as a "burnt electric or plastic" smell. The 110v, 1250w element was replaced this year and the therostat set on about 110 degrees. I did not have this problem in years past and the wife is getting upset... I tried to bleach the tank and lines but that did not work. Any others with this problem or can recommend a fix?

HW heater smell

Scott I leave the heating element off except for the 20 or so minutes it takes to heat the water. I've gotten into the habit of using the hot water faucet almost all the time, even when there's no hot water from either the element or the engine, to keep water moving through the heater. Other than those "operational" issues, the only other thing is a teardown, which may not be necessary with a new element. Only you can suspect (and inspect) the overall condition of the tank inside. Mine took a while

It took quite a while for mine to sweeten back up. Keep running it. just put a hose in the filler and turn on the faucet. Maybe you could put in a glug of bleach. Rodger

Hose breakdown?

Could it be that the hot water hoses have begun to break down and you are getting the plastic odors and taste from that breakdown. The hoses that were installed may not have been intended for potable water. Big bummer if You have to pull them and replace them.

HW Smell

I've had the same problem on my 310 since I bought the boat new. The sulphur like odor appears if I leave the boat for a week, particularly in the hot weather. The only way I know to get rid of this is to run the hot water faucet(s)to drain the tank, refilling with water from the header tank. Using the hot water faucet as often as possible also seems to reduce the onset of the odor. I've tried the commercial "sweet water" treatments and bleach - nothing appears to stop this completely.

I had the same smell from our hot water when I let it sit unused one winter. I flushed it out good and now make a point to run the hot water every week or so. I also heard a tip to heat the water for 24 hours every couple of weeks at least. The end result is that the smell has never returned.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who has replyed. I do use the boat and the hot water every weekend and try to flush the system every weekend as well. I will try bleaching the tank and running the fresh water directly through the tank as recommended. Ths is the first year I have had this problem and I sure hope the plastic pipe plumbing does not need to be replaced. BTW, Had a great ocean sail down the coast of NJ on Saturday. Left the marina at 7 am, up the Pt. Pleasant Canal with the tide, 7.5 kt's, perfectly smooth (any body who know's the canal knows how good that is) Out the Manasquan Inlet and down the coast. In the Barnaget Inlet and back up the bay to the marina. Here we call that "Around the Island" Conditions where perfect. 10 to 15kts. out of the WSW all day and even through all day Sunday, Manasquan and Barnaget Inlets where very pleasant, 3 to 4 ft. swells, 6 second intervals, beautiful Blue/Aqua color water, ocean temp in the mid 60's making the air temp about 85. 5 bridge openings with no delays! 53 miles in total in just over 9 hours. No Thunder Storm warnings.....enough right??? It was just the most perfect day of sailing in NJ. Had to tell you guy's!!! Still smiling... :) Thanks Again, Scott
