Isotemp

They are great units. I have friends who have them and say they keep water hot for days. I just bought a 6.5 gal. model to replace the 20 yr. old Raritan on my Ericson 35. Unfortunately my sail locker opening limits the size of the unit I can install. Call the folks at Great Water in Brunswick Maine. Kathy is a pleasure to work with. http://www.great-water.com/pages/Isotemp/Isotemp_index.shtml Tim R.

Easiest to replace with the same model.

Jay: It is really easiest to replace your heater with the same model. I am guessing that yours is a Seaward. They make decent units for the price.

that the smaller the hot water tank, the faster it heats up. I have a 6 gallon on my 38 foot boat instead of the 11 gallon.

I had to laugh

The first time I ever said "Hot water heater" to the world's best marina manager (Gordy at Pike's Bay) he said to me "Well, if it's hot already, why are you heating it up?" Gotta love a guy like that.

Hot Water Heater

I replaced my Seaward in an 81 catalina 30 a couple years ago with the same unit. It's quite a tight fit. Make sure that the new model will fit. Otherwise you will have a lot of plumbing work to do.

Hot running water is a wonderful convience but very costly

We heat water each day and store it in two large coffee pot thermoses. About one gallon is enough to last us for the entire day. Since we avoid going out when it is very hot doing without a shower but just washing with a bowl of water and a wash cloth is adaquate. Dishes are washed with hot water and rinsed with cold. We wash up with tank water and drink and cook with melt water from the jugs of ice.

6 gallon Raritan w/engine heat exchanger

Replaced existing with same size two years ago in my 85 Pearson 34. Existing was badly rusted. New has plastic, instead of steel, shell. Very well insulated. In the engine run time dousing sails & anchoring or picking up a mooring water gets hot, plenty to wash evening dishes & breakfast dishes (v. gd. insulation). One of the best replacements I have done. She lives on a mooring so I am never plugged in @ a dock. Not costly.

Tank size and heat-up time considerations

We have an M25 engine with the Seaward 6 gallon tank. Results do depend on two things: how much you motor (or have to) and what temperature your engine thermostat is. There are two stats: 160 and 180. With our 180 stat that 6 gallons gets pretty hot in about 35 minutes of run time at cruising speed. We usually have to motor out at least 40 minutes before setting sail. For overnights, running the engine doesn't hack it, because it shouldn't be run at low idle for too long and it takes awhile to get the water warmed up, unless you're charging your batteries. Folks have noted: it's a lot cheaper to run a $900 generator than a $9,000 engine. There are other ways to make HW: there are "instant" gas camping setups, and the old standby: H2O shower mixing hot water into cold. Lotsa different ideas out there. More importantly, check your HW lines from the engine to the heater, too. Ours run under the galley sole, out of sight out of mind - they broke last year, draining the coolant from the engine...the instructions on the heaters do mention this. :)

Sapce and weight

Don't forget about the space required and the additional weight of both the larger tank and the extra six gallons of water @ 8.34lbs per gallon. Your adding the equivalent of 50.00lbs of water alone and the difference between a Raritan 6 & 12 gallon water heater is 25lbs.. Going from 6 to 12 gallons is a minimum of about a 75 pound difference... If it were me I'd install a flow restricter or mixing valve on a 6 gallon and save that weight for additional batteries..

What about storage time?

How long does your heater keep the water cold? The Isotemp has been known to keep water hot for days. It has outstanding insulation and is entirely SS construction. Tim R.

Brands would be helpful!!!!

Thanks for all the incite on whether or not I should increase the size of the tank but I am more looking for brands that you all have installed in your boats. The old tank is gone. It rusted out and needed to be replaced. So the question is with what tank. The original? Are the efficient as some of the other brands on the market?

Isotemp is a brand

Others include Force 10(on Sabres), Raritan(on Ericsons). Not sure what Catalina used. I still think the Isotemp is the best you can get for this type of usage. Tim R.

Seaward is your probable replacement!

Jay: Seaward is the probable replacement for your boat. You best bet is to call Catalina and ask them what they used. I am guessing that they still use Seaward. W/M no longer carries their products.
