What would make a hot water heater stop working? Ours worked fine all last summer. It was properly winterized and now this season won't work. It's filled with water and the power light comes on ... but no how water. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

PROBALY ELECT. ELEMENTS BURNED UP WITH OUT WATER TO COOL THEM .YOU MAYBE TURNED THE HEATER ON WITH OUT WATER IN THE TANK. NOT HARD TO FIX.

One way of winterizing is to join the cold water "in" tube to the hot water "out" pipe, thus bypassing the hw heater tank. If the tubes have not been reconnected to the hw heater tank, you will not get hw.

Probably Burned Heating Element

We bought a used sailboat last year. The PO had tied the cold water "in" tube to the hot water "out" tube the previous winter. Although we knew this had been done,we "forgot" during the anticipation of commissioning our new (to us) boat. Needless to say we quickly burned out the heating element when we turned the power on. And yes, the light on the breaker panel showed the tank was energized. West Marine ordered us a new heating element, all of $17.00. It was fairly easy to install. The new element was almost twice as long as the old element, but it did fit. The old element was coated with scale and other substances. I imagine the new, clean, larger element heats the water much faster than the old one did.

Home Depot or any hardware store

Water heater heating elements are one of the few things that are generic--the same ones that are used in household water heaters fit the ones on boats. Just be sure to match the voltage--replace 1,000 W with only 1,000 W and 1500 W with only 1500 W. About half the price of marine suppliers.
