I am thinking of buying a 1985 28.5. However, the current owner has disconnected/removed the hot water heater (Haven't been able to test the potable water system yet) Could you provide answers to the following questions? (a)Is there a major problem that would justify the heater removal? (b)How difficult is it to reconnect the system? (c) Is the potable water system operational without the hot water heater?

No problem.

John: a). It was probably leaking. b). Easy to reconnect. c). No problem running the water system. They probably have a look where the heater was. Be sure to deduct thet cost of a heater ($250 material

Heater

There is no reason not to replace a bad heater unless the owner never used the hot water system. One inlet hose from the engine cooling system, one outlet hose to the engine cooling system. One inlet hose from the potable water system and one outlet hose to this system. You can use the potable water system without the hot water connected as long as there is a correct bypass installed. All inner tanks on Seaward 6 gallon hot water heaters are aluminum.

NO Problem

I have never used mine since I bought the boat. It is bypasssed. For all I know it doesn't work. Really don't miss it. At the dock I use their showers. On the water I don't run the engine enough to keep the water hot.

No Problem, you have used yours!

If you let the engine heat the water, you have used the hot water heater. The heater is storing potable water and the engine is heating it rather than the 120v AC.

David, thanks for the correction (TYPO)!

I corrected my post. Fingers are faster than brain!

h20 heater

The heat from the motor is like a heat exchanger. The motor h2o flows through a exchanger and heat the potable h2o for use.
