Curious if anyone has made a bypass for their hot water heater on a 350.

Did the Bypass

J I did the hot water bypass on my C310. (I believe it is the same 11 gallon version as on the 350). I bought the more elaborate kit with a valve so I can just turn the valve now to let water in to the heater or cut it off. It was somewhat difficult working in the tight space and awkward position but relatively easy plumbing. i drained the heater by opening the petcock and pressure valve. i connected the bypass and then refilled the system to test for leaks. Then i drained the system again and added my anti freeze. i opened the valve for a few moments to let some antifreeze to enter the heater in case some water remained. Then I shut the valve to cut the heater out of the system. This allowed me to only use between 4-5 gallons to winterize. Over the years, i will save bundles on antifreeze and in one year pay for the cost of the bypass kit. Good luck. Tim

Whats a hot water by pass?

OK, at the risk of asking a really dumb question, what is a hot water by pass? Bill Welsch Punta Gorda, FL

Save the pink stuff

On my current boat I installed a bypass for the hot water hearer so that when winterizing I don't have to fill the H/W heater with pink stuff.

I guess it depends on access to the hot water heater. I have very easy access, I disconnect the input line to the heater and plug it. Drain the heater and use the pump to circulate the antifreeze through the rest of the system. I empty the hot water lines to the faucets by back blowing through the faucets. The pressure also helps empty the heater.

Hot Water By-Pass

Here is what my dealer instructed regarding winterization and the hot water heater on my 350: 1. Drain the water heater, located in the starboard stern quarter of the boat, by opening the spigot below the red hose (on the left side of the water heater) and by opening the pressure-relief valve on the right side. These can be accessed by getting into the port transom locker or leaning/reaching into the starboard stern locker. 2. In the main bilge area, disconnect the "Hot Water Feed," which is the blue hose on the right of the manifold, as you face the bow, and the red main hot water line, on the left in the rear of the manifold. 3. Place winged threaded connectors on the threads of the two disconnected lines and connect a clear hose to each. If they are tight, they'll fit over the connectors; otherwise you will need hose clamps. This overrides the hot water heater, eliminating the need to fill it with anti-freeze. I watched this being done and it sounds more complicated than it really is.

Hot water bypass.. C-350

I have a couple of simple questions that I hope someone can help me with.... On the hot water heater (Catalina 350), there are two blue lines on the right and a same size red on the left. I assume the lower blue hose is the guy we want to remove from the tank and connect it to the red hose from the left in order to bypass the heater and use just a few gallons of anti freeze in the water tanks to pump through the system. I can not get the (blue hose)darn thing off the plastic nozzle! I mean I really pulled on that thing it is as tight as can be. Can I instead use the procedure above and accomplish the same thing at the water manifold in the bilge without disconnecting hoses from the tank? Thanks
