Hi there!

Well- we've been out every weekend lately, sailing off Marina del Rey..having a ball... So far, so good - with just a few minor issues here and there.
I had a question - I have the 1984 Hunter 31. After running the engine, I've turned on the water in the sink - and it comes out HOT as heck!! Obviously the heat from the engine is heating the water tank up intensely. My question - is this normal? Or should I be worried that the engine is overheating? Or anything else?

Thanks!

HOT WATER

I think normal temperature for that engine is 160 F, so the water is going to be a good bit hotter than water from a normal home heater. You can check the thermostat by pulling it and heating it in a pan while measuring the temperature of the water accurately.. I always caution people on board that the water is very hot. Yanmar recommends changing the thermostat every year but that is WAY too often. If your thermostat is the original one for that engine, it may be time to check it or replace it.. The part is about $35.

Oh great....

Ya- the water was MUCH hotter after running the engine. Scalding temperature. I just wanted to make sure that wasn't a "symptom" of the engine running too hot or something. Good idea to think about changing the thermostat. I"m doing the oil and filters this week. :) Thanks!
