Hello all I saw an article in a magazine where a bloke in the Whitsunday Islands (Australia) used chilli powder as an additive to his antifowl. Seems he had very little marine growth after 3 years. That motivated the author of the story to have a go . He mixed 100g of Chilli powder with Jotun Antifowl and claims no growth after 7 months. Hmmm! Very interesting. Just wondering if anyone else has heard of using CHILLI POWDER as an ANTIFOWL and if it was successful? Cheers for now Tony

Another try!

I have heard of adding everything but the kitchen sink to bottom paint to make it work better, but i have not seen anything work except tributal tin. and thats banned for paint. Im no expert but dont you think that a paint manufacturer would put in pepper, or chill powder or any other cheap over the counter filler that would work if he could make the paint work better? I think they would jump at the shot. But they don't good luck but we have played with it for years and the stuff from the can works best.

Works for Me

I've been adding cayenne pepper to bottom paint for years, and it does seem to help keep the critters at bay. A friend even goes to the trouble of drying & crushing Habaneros (really hot stuff ) Think about it....if you were a barnacle, would you want to attach yourself to a hot pepper ? Here in south FL., anything that can extend the life of bottom paint is worth a try !

I tried cayenne pepper wit mixed results...

I put it in my paint-BIG MISTAKE!!!! And also mixed it with Desitin and put it on my prop and transducers. Mixed with paint was a disaster. It made the paint rough like a sand finish and I figure it cost me a good 1/4kt in speed. It was also very difficult to apply with a roller. This year it was all sanded off and my speed is back to normal. On the prop and underwater metal I had mixed results- The first year it was great. However, during that year we did a two extended cruises for 5 weeks and 4 weeks. A lot of motoring was done. The second year (last year) the weather was so bad that the boat sat for (3) 4-week periods. The growth over those periods was terrible. Bottom line: Use the boat, motor as well as sail and the bottom and prop will stay cleaner.

Antifowl (he he)

I think I meant antiFOUL! wooops. The bloke also used Tobasco Sauce. It sort of seems logical that it could work.
