Have Shurflo water pump that continously recycles - 4-5 times/minutes and over time empties water tanks. Turn off switch when not using water. Have searched for leaks for months- last week found fitting going into cold water side of Seaward water heater model S-600 1992 Vintage. There was a pin hole spraying water. The part appears to be a strainer or a check valve. The part is marked as Shurflo - can not read the part number, looks likeModel # starting in 140 -- can not read rest. There is another marking that is outlinedwith 4-5 unreadable numbers or letters then a - and either 6RIFF or GRIFF. Part Labelled U.S.A. Called Surflo and they could not identify the part or what it would be for. I removed the part and connected the pump directly to the water heater, and the recycling has stopped. Concerned that if this is a restrictor or back flow preventer that if water tank hot, could build pressure and damage the pump. Part removed is black, about 2" square, one side has a 3/4 inch male OD thread that went into an elbow into the tank, cold inlet, other side an offset 1/2 " barb that connects to the hose from the water pump. It is not a filter that can be opened. Can blow through both sides and suck air from each end and there seems to be no restriction. There is a filter on the inlet side of the water pump that is clear and serviceable. Question, anyone with knowledge of what this part does, and is it necessary to have. Shurflow had no information on this issue ??? called three different numbers given by West Marine - they had no clew. Any help appreciated. PS , after removed part that was leaking, ran engine and water from heat exchanger produced hot water. Did not try it on the 110 Volt electric- but it has previously been working fine. Biggest concern is if run enging for long period, will there be added pressure built up in the system and damage the pump? Is it safe to ignore this part. TESailor

Why not just buy a new water pump?

They aren't expensive. Everything has a lifespan, and if yours is so old that the mfr (Shurflo) can't even identify the model, it's time to give it a decent burial! You'll be amazed at how much more efficiently a new one will work and how much better the water pressure will be. And then there's that added little safety issue that you won't have to worry about if you go with a new pump instead of jury rigging the old one.

A 2.8 gpm is the right size for your boat.

That sounds like a one-way valve. Because hot water expands and will creep back into the cold water supply, people usually have a one way valve installed between the cold water supply and the heater tank inlet.

Since you can blow thru both side, the flapper or whatever inside is gone. The 3/4 OD male thread is called 1/2 MPT (Male Pipe Thread). This is a common item that you can buy from decent plumbing store for trade people.

The one I have is cylindrical about 1-1/4 OD with pipe threads on both side. There is a spring loaded flapper valve inside. You can only blow thru it one way.
