Hot Engine

Our 1986 has a 21 hp diesel engine. She has about 1000 hours and does'nt burn oil but it runs hot. We have changed the filter, pump empellar, and hoses. 190 to 200 degrees. We checked the heat exchanger and it was clean. Any thoughts on our problem would be appreciated.Safe passages

Gary--Could your raw water seacock be restricted with either bottom paint or marine growth, thus reducing the flow of cooling water?Just a thought.Randy

Water Heater Circuit

I had a similar situation because of an air bubble in the water heater circuit. Apparently it would not allow the water to circuilate adequately. Try isolating the water heater and see if your cooling improves.

Check if the exhaust outlet appears to be outputing enough water? Believe it or not check the engine oil level. Check the fresh water coolant level. Replace the thermostat in the fresh water system. Check for an air leak between the raw water intake and the impeller, then the impeller to the heat exchanger. Good luck.

Been there

Been there done that! When I first purchased my C-30 it ran between 140-160degrees. last year running over 1800 rpm's It would go up to 180-190 degrees. I went through all the checks suggested. My fix ended up being the thermostate. Seems to be doing O.K. now.good luck

Temp gauge accurate?

If the temp gauge is going it may show a hot engine when its not. They sell temp sticks, they look like crayons. You run the motor uo to temp then see if the stick will melt on the engine block. They come in different temps. Cat gauges are not known for being real accurate.

Easy fix

My Catalina 30 was running hot, but water coming out of the stern OK. I checked the impeller, water pump - couldn't figure it out. It turned out that the siphon hose that goes up under the galley sink area was kinked. We replaced the hose and it was like magic!
