Returned Sunday from Grenada where I chartered a Jeanneau 50 DS to the Grenadines for 10 days from Horizon Yacht Charters Grenada.
Beware. Be very aware.
Superficially, the boat was beautiful. She sailed great to 11.1 knts.
Over the course of the charter the full extent of the boat's deficiencies (running rigging, refrigerator, dinghy leak, broken paddles, inoperable cell phone, chain to rope rode knotted with monkey fist sized knot which jammed the windlass after 60 m of chain had been put out, and a myriad of minor others) became evident.
As we began Day 8, the company failed to warn me of severe pending weather conditions and left my crew (wife, daughter) and me to deal with 36 hours of squalls with gale force gusts in 6-8 foot seas.
One hour from True Blue Bay home port, while furling all sails before yet another squall, smoke billowed from the companionway and quarter birth side ports, and 60 feet of topping lift whipped overhead (cheap shackle).
The impeller was trashed, the motor's exhaust was destroyed, there had been no engine overheating alarms/panel lights.
We were adrift in the water in high winds and rough seas, hove to 1000 yds from Pt. Saline shoals.
Huey, Dewey, and Louie were dispatched to assist via another sailboat and transferred vessel to vessel, only to demonstrate their lack of seamanship skills on the water.
It was surreal.
Then, the charter company attempted to blame me for all issues once in port, including tampering with the cell phone (Why would I remove a battery pack from our sole source of communications?), ignoring motor overheating alarms (none, nada, nil), and stealing the spare impeller from the Kit Bag (What???).
Not one utterance of concern for my wife and daughter's safety and well being was ever offered by owner/manager, James Pascall, nor did he assume any responsibility on the company's part for the peril he place my crew in.
My crew sure learned to sail though....for their lives! We walked away though with some amazing stories.
Be very aware of Horizon Yacht Charters LTD.

Sorry that you had such a miserable time. One comment I might make is that anyone sailing a boat should be aware themselves of impending weather conditions and changes and not rely on someone else to offer up such info. Another comment would be to always check that there is water coming out of the exhaust while operating the engine. If you don't see any, then there might be a problem. One should not rely on warning signals alone. Unfortunately some charter boats don't get the proper maintenance attention they deserve for a number of reasons. One is that the boat is constantly out to charter and not around for maintenance, or problems on the boat are not communicated back to the charter company so they can address the issues, or they might not have competent technicians to fix problems. Generally speaking, however, I think Horizon is a reputable company and have known lots of people who have chartered with them without incident.

I have had similar experiences with certain companies in the BVI. Fortunately we did not have any issues in the Grenadines, where the conditions were ALWAYS at least 25 knots of wind and 8 ft seas (we chartered thru TMM down there). I feel for you and am glad to hear that you all made it though more or less intact! What I have learned regarding bareboat chartering is that you cannot be too thorough in your inspection of the vessel and its systems. Each time I charter I learn at least one new thing to look for! One of the potential problems in the Grenadines is that you are far away from any real services most of the time, so if there is a problem it can be very difficult to get it fixed.

We had good experiences in BVI and St. Martin with Horizon. Been looking forward to a return trip and would always prefer Horizon. Maybe things are different in the Grenadines.

Holy cow! It's the end of July. And the Grenadines. I think squalls are normal. O We were down there in april/May. Pretty much 20-25 kts all the time, 6-7' seas. Probably one of the best sailing areas I've been to. No squalls. But that's the July's the reason the rates are really low, yes?

I have never dealt with Horizon. Always TMM and Sunsail. Caveat Emptor. Look at it this way. Next time you'll be better prepared. So will many of these readers!
Hope your next bareboat is better.

Bob.
