It's hard to beat.......

The Harken cruising furler at $1249. I had one on my last boat and it was the best furler I've ever had! http://shop.sailboatowners.com/detail.htm?fno=400&group=869&cat=1606

All of the main manufacturers make a good unit. 20 years ago was different.

Hood 701SL

I have a Hood 701 SL on my 1991 28 Catalna. This is my second Hood SL furler. The first was replaced due to damage in a dismasting. Both have worked very well and I wouldnot hesitate to repalce it with another. We looked at Profurl before we replaced and was going to go with it, but the Mfg. could not supply it in a timely manor (3 months after being told it was shipped we still did not have it). Got the Hood in 2 weeks and cost less money. Glad we went with the Hood. The 701 should fit the 309 just fine. Our new mast height is 39 ft. jerry

Can't speak for the Hood System but

I have a Profurl and love it. My experience says that it is the furler choice of coastal and long distance cruisers, because you install it and forget it. the bearings are sealed and I only know of one person who ever replaced any part of one, and that was because a Mexican boatyard buckled his older, and no longer used head-foil when they were dropping his mast. It was only the head-foil he had to replace. Joe

Our 1991 model year boat came with a double line...

Hood furling system. In the over six years of cruising thousands of miles in PNW waters it has never jammed, nothing breaks and always works. All I do is rinse the drum with fresh water after each cruise recommended by the maker. Some day I may install the single line kit for better reefing. As it is I must lock the drum to hold a reef. Just switched to Hood 707

I just upgraded my old Hood 810 SL to a new Hood 707 LD. Pompanette is selling the new unit as an upgrade at1/2 price the list of a new one to owners of the older Hood models. It's just getting installed, so I have no experience with it but my rigger says it's a good system, especially at 1/2 price. Give them a call 813-885-2182 or email.
