I am in the process of buying a Catalina 27 tallrig. There is no roller furling system on it. After much debate it appears that I will have the Hood/ Sea Furl 707 installed with the sail work for around $1800.00. The other option was the Shaefer 750 for around $2300.00. Both quotes are turn-key. Does anyone have experience with either unit? The boat will be used mostly for bay sailing but I will typically go out when it's 20-25kts so the rig may get some stress. Thanks in advance, Rob

Hood or Schaefer

The shaefer system is a really good system. I have used Hood products on my grandfathers blue water boat before and they too are a solid product( he recently switched to Shaefer when he went to Shaefer boom furling only to have matching setups). What I believe puts Shaefer in front is the ease of assembly from the riggers stand point and the reefing capablities in a pinch. The Shaefer system and Hood marketing departments claim reefing on any point of sail. I have used the shaefer in 20+ knots and reefed the Genoa, besides the resistence you would expect furling was superb. The Shaefer system also allows you to use your existing headstay (note use your own judgment rigging does not have expiration date but when it goes, it goes to h*ll quick, 12-14yrs is standard). I have not installed Hood systems but I have Shaefer. You can install the system your self if you feel handy and/or have used swagless fitings sta-lock or norsemen. That is my two cents and some change.
