I purchased a Hunter 25 last year and it was supposed to come with the mariners package -- including a Hood H10000 jib furler and jib sail. Being new to sailing I didn't realize that we didn't have a furling jib until we got out onto the water. I'm in the process of getting the boat ready to launch this year and have been looking into jib furlers. Is the Hood furler that comes with the boat a decent furler that's worth going back to the boat brokerage that sold us the boat and trying to get them to give us the proper equipment? The rigging company that I received an estimate from said that most of the furlers that come standard on the boat aren't very good and that we will most likely be calling him in a year to replace the Hood system with a Harken. Any thoughts? Can anyone tell me how their factory installed furlers are working?

I am about to replace my 30-year old furler with a Hood. It is on the recommendation of more than one sailor. One of those had the same boat as mine and has over forty years of experience so I trust his judgement.

Ed, Thanks for the recommendation. It sounds like I should save myself some money then and head back to the broker to try to get the Hood furler. It's worth trying it out -- if we then want to upgrade it we can do that at a later date.

Hood furler is fine

I have sailed my 2006 hunter 25 for 3 seasons now. I likely use the boat more than most as it is in a marina that is in my neighborhood. The hood furler that was on it as a new boat has been fine. I haven't had any issues at all with the furler. As a matter of fact, the only problem I have had with the boat was the rudder connection weld breaking. That was an easy fix with a delrin block and a few stainless bolts.

Glad to hear that it's working well for you. I've contacted the dealer to try to get them to provide the furler that was supposed to be included in our package -- we'll see how that goes. We also had some issues with our rudder last year and I'm wondering if you might be able to help us out with some of our questions. We had the boat on a dock on a lake for a while and the rudder took on a lot of stress from waves when boats went by. The bracket that holds the mast crutch and the rudder has bent as a result of the rudder banging around. If you are in the cockpit and look back at the rudder the bracket is bending out on each side (such that you can't get the mast crutch on. It would seem that the rudder should be able to be pulled completely out of the water when not in use and I'm wondering if ours is assembled incorrectly. Do you have the ability to pull yours completely out of the water with the attached line? Hopefully you can advise us on the issue -- we've been trying to get some help from Hunter but are still waiting for a return call.

My 25.5 came with hanked-on jib. I installed CD furler in 2005. I have had no problem with it. I also installed a 135% jib that was heavier than the original jib. I have also replaced the main. Good luck.
