Hi: I have a Hood 705 LD furler that needs a new line (continuous). My question is if a new spliced line can be fit in the furler or does the line need to be spliced on the boat after putting thru the furler? Gary Sisson

put on then splice

two options, you mentioned. if you do the splice first there's the topological issue of getting in on the furler. only way i can think of to do that is to remove forestay and dismantle furler. sounds easier to put on line then splice.

Im pretty sure your furler

works about the same way as my old Hood 810 LD furler. If it has the same continuous furling line it has to be spliced on the boat in order to fit both the drum and the fairlead blocks. I commented (see archives) on my failure to master the "constant diameter" splice needed to install a new furling line. I did, however, invent a work around "splice" that worked quite well instead. Let me know if need to know how I did that and I'll send it to you.

here's how:

I've done this several times: 1)Take a spare halyard forward and attach it firmly to a cleat or toe rail. Don't use the bow pulpit. 2)Tension the halyard enough to ease the forestay. 3)Remove the forestay pin and open the drum. 4)Remove the old loop and install the new spliced loop. 5)Reassemble the drum and pin the forestay back into place. 6)Remove the halyard and go sailing.

Replacing pin

Yeah Steve, but you did not tell them how many beers it took to get the pin back in the headstay on Beaver Island;-))) Fair winds Dave
