I preped and finished the companion way hatch boards and slides this weekend on my O'Day 25. I used a two part finish called Honey Teak. It went on quickly and you reapply each coat after 20 minutes of drying time. We did two coats of honey and two coats of clear. We shall see. The results look outstanding, the manufacture claims it will last a couple of years before needing to be touched up, in Florida. I live in Texas, I will let you know how it turns out. I just received the teak toe rails, hand rails and hatch slides. I will be preparing the teak on the next week and will set up the before and after photos for everyone in a few weeks. How did you prep ?

EJ, Are these all new teak parts, or are they existing on your boat with old varnish, oil, etc. How did you prep them ? I am very interested in your results as I need to do mine also. They are weathered as well as peeling varnish.

Prep and Pics

The condition of the teak ranged from 1 year old to original. I bought new teak companionway hatch boards last spring and oiled them one time. The hatch board slides (that hold the companionway boards) were original. I sanded all wood to bare wood with 100 grit and followed the instructions for prep of the wood for the finish, just added one step prior to application and that was to brush on Denatured Alcohol. I applied two coats of the honey and two coats of the clear in 20 minute intervals, the prior coat must still be tacky when you apply the next coat. Total time was 3 hours for sanding cleaning and finishing. You cannot tell with board is 20 years old and which is a year old. I am imnpressed. Pics to follow as soon as my father gets the pics developed, which could be a year, or I will take some pics this weekend weather permitting and get them posted soon. I attached a link to the Signature Finish's web site. It is a little expensive, but if it last a few years it will pay for is self. EJ Tews Jennifer Lea
