Honda OUtboar repair cost??

I just delivered my outboard to a shop for what I THOUGHT was going to be a carb tune-up.. and just got a call saying I needed a new head and a valve job - to the tune of $650! !! It's a 1985 motor and was running fine save for some low-speed running, which I assumed was the carb. Does it sound like I'm being taken? And is that an appropriate amount of cash for a new head, and valve job?

Bobby,lets see, $650 into a 17 year old motor.1st, is it a 2 or 4 stroke, what is the HP, what do you use it for, it's primary function?If it were me and I was faced with your situation I would take the $650 and put it towards a new motor (or at least a used motor say in the 1995 vintage)last season I bought a 3.5HP Tohatsu (to use with my inflatable) for a little less than $650.you may want to look at Tohatsu, a lot of people around here have them and love them.good luck

I am interested to see where you end up...

See my post on request for new engine advice. I had my lower end replaced and the used parts didn't seem to work out. I am looking at a new engine at the recommendation of my mechanic who for some reason is trying to do right by me and keep me from throwing money at an old engine. He returned the money for the parts and I told him to keep the $100 for the labor as we both were optimistic the lower end he had laying around would work. I hope the karma I get from letting him keep what he earned in labor is recognized by the engine gods.Tor
