I have had a 2000 Honda 4 stroke 8hp for three years. It has been used weekly on a Hunter 26. I have had nothing but trouble with this engine for the last six months. The latest is that the engine runs fine with the engine cover removed. Put the cover back on and it idles roughly and has no power in gear. Any ideas? Thanks.

I had the same problem with my Honda 9.9 I had the carburetor rebuilt for $125.00 and it helped a lot but did not make it new again. after a lot of searching I found a dealer who was able to find a new carburetor at the warehouse for $94.00 I installed it myself and it runs fine now.

Air Vent

The engine sounds starved for air, check the cover for an air filter or some obstruction to the air intake. I had a Honda 20 years ago that had no problems once I got rid of the spiders. Fair Winds kevin

Check your exhaust I had the same problem The exhaust was broken and cabon monoxide was coming back into engine space choking the engine .It needs clean air to run.My problem was same as yours ran with cover off.Good luck. V32 Prologue1
