Does any body know of any anchoring restrictions at the South Yacht Basin, north of the Albert Whitted Municipal Airport during the Honda Grand Prix Race, April 1-3, 2005. Thanks!

I am told there will be no anchoring

I have been told there is no anchoring there. They are building large temporary docks for big boats and the locals as usual can take the back seat. The basin should be full of slips and closed to anchoring.

Why the South Basin?

The South Basin has never been an approved anchorage (tho' we sometimes use it for a hull scrub and swim on a hot day) and the line of sight wouldn't give you much of a view of the race despite being next to the airport unless you sit up the mast. Lordy tho', you will get the noise. I'd suggest you enjoy the Vinoy Basin anchorage, perhaps by getting there a day early, and walking over to a venue where you can watch with a better view, either free or with a ticket. Another option is to try the Bayboro Basin, next to the USF campus. It's a short walk to the airport and beyond, or you can take the free bus. This too is apparently off limits for anchoring...but I notice boats being left alone there by the officials for a day or two. Jack

Thanks all of the responses

The Vinoy sounds like an idea. I do think it'll be crowded, but thats part of the deal. I checked the prices for the temporary marina the organizers will be setting up. %&#@!!!!! A tad expensive to say the least. Gil
