i HAVING TROUBLE WITH MY HONDA 50 O/B. WILL NOT IDLE, HAS BEEN IN SHOP FOR 7 WEEKS JUST FOUND OUT TODAY THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX. Gas stabilizer for Honda engines
As with the first post addressing your problem, I also suspect the carburetors are gummed up and need cleaning as he suggest. And, from your comments, I definitely think you need to find a qualified mechanic to fix the carbs. After the carbs are cleaned, each tank of gas needs gasoline stablizer to ensure no problems in the future. I have a 2003 Honda 50 hp engine that I purchased new in January, 2004. I typically run the engine from early March until late November. The other months of the year it is laid up and not run at all. However, regardless of whether it is being run or sitting idle, every tank of gasoline has gasoline stablizer added to it according to the stablizer manufacturers recommendations. I've not had any problems at all with the engine.

I also have a Honda 50 2004. It will not come back to the same idle rpm consistently. Sometimes 650 800 or 1100. Have tried setting happy medium but still its all over the place. Hot or cold ,fresh gas,thermostat ok,choke working, nothing loose, no difference. It’s just off of breakin and runs great except for this. Is this a common problem? Thanks in advance. Ps I though Hondas were supposed to represent engineering excellence.

it's the chandlery near Harbor Patrol Office in Oceanside. They'll probably have to look at it, they ain't cheap but have reputation for honesty & doing what they say they will.

Gary, If you are willing to drive down the 55 to Costa Mesa, contact Tradewinds Inflatables at 19th and Placentia. They are the key dealer in OC and will fix your problems. I had the exact problem you described. As mentioned, if you leave the motor around for a while, it will gum up in the carb. Even if you run it dry after each use and store it in an upright condition, you can fully expect this to happen. The only way I have been told to prevent this is to regularly use a stabilizer in your fuel. And, only by the amount of gas that you will need. Don't store it for a long time. It ran fine the first summer. The second summer (engine sits from Oct to June) it started easily, ran rough and wouldn't idle. Stale gas was the problem. Fortunately, switching to fresh gas was enough in my case. The third summer I had the same problem again even with fresh gas but it was because I switched from regular to premium on somebody's recommendation. I switched back to regular and it again ran fine. What does this mean?? What exactly did they do?? It's possible they went through the obvious things like carb, filter and fuel and it still does not idle. Or it could be they didnot do anything and it is their way of telling you they don't like Honda's. My Honda did the same thing after sitting most of the year. I fixed myself. Those spray on cleaners and fuel additives are for preventive maintenance not for fixing it once broke. Honda carbs are really basic and if you are a little mechanically inclined it's pretty easy to fix. More than likely the fuel deposits have gummed up you needle float valve and it will not shut off the gas at idle. At idle your carb floods and engine dies. While running at higher rpm you are burning enough fuel to keep it from flooding. There are two bolts that hold the carb on. With the carb off take out the 4 screws that hold the bowl on. Clean the bowl with carb cleaner. Take the float and needle valve out and clean with carb cleaner. Clean the seat where the needle rests. Put back together. Should work like a champ. Ted

Thanks Ted, I don't think they've done anything, except replaced warer pump. They tell me there are waiting for a uni-sic, to adjust carbs, I've told them wrong the carbs just do not get out of sdjustment, their dirty they say we'll let you know. i told them i picking up boat next saturday if not fixed. I was going to do the repairs myself but the linkage looked like a nightmare to put back together. But maybe I'll try. Thanks for your help Gary

It sounds like you have a classic gummed up carb(s)case. Specifically the low speed circuit. Usually rebuilding & cleaning the carbs will do it. Of course fresh gas & a tune up w/ proper plugs will help. A good decarb w/ engine tuner never hurts either. I don't blame you for looking for another mechanic. Find one that has the service manual for your model. They usually have good trouble shooting guides.
