Hi all, I'm the proud new owner of a 1985 Oday 222 with the original Honda BF12 outboard. The impeller on the outboard had not been changed in years and it died last week. I took it to my local service shop but they were backed up for 3 to 4 weeks. They really didn't seen to interested in getting to me anytime soon. I don't want to wait a month to get back on the water so I'd like to replace it myself, if I can get a little guidance. I searched online but I can't find any info on changing the darn thing. I've changed one on an old Force outboard about 10 years ago but that was the last time I had to open a lower unit. If you have changed your impeller, any advice on what is the easiest way for me to replace the one on my Honda? Thanks, Terry

I did one on a BF8...

it was pretty easy. Hopefully someone will be able to tell you about your BF12 but as I recall on the BF8 you just need to drop the lower unit which is secured by four (or maybe 6?) bolts and then disconnect the shift linkage up at the top by the shift handle so the lower unit can drop down. The impeller is in a little case on the top of the lower unit. It's been a few years but as I recall it was something like an hour job. The hardest part is getting the cotter pin for the shift linkage in/out. Have fun!

almost all ouboard are about the same...

the bigger the outboard the bigger the parts. You may want to consider a new waterpump wear plate and changing the oil in the lower unit at the same time.

Terry...

...first get the manual for your motor, I don't mean the one that came with it, I mean the Books you can get from WM, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. It will give step by step instuctions on how to do it. (I think I got mine cheap at B&Noble online.) Also iboats.com has wonderful forums on Hoda and all of the motors. It is usually a simple job...with the manual! Hope that helps. Jack
