I have a 9.9 Honda 4-stroke from about 1981. Would anyone know if there is an electric start unit that can be installed. I have the manual that speaks to electic start as an accessory, but no details. I would appreciate any help on availability and/or sources.

Brian, I have a factory rapair manual for that

motor so tomorrow I push some snow around so I can get into the boat and I respond back about your question in the evening. Someone else might know the answer before then, if not...you'll know then. I think the manual was about $20 last year and it covers EVERYTHING well enough that with some common sense, and a little tool experence, just about any repair can be done. Ray S/V Speedy

Brian, I have a 1981 Honda BF100L, Serial number 1300698, and the Shop Manual for it. The manual doesn't list an electric starter for this engine -- only rope pull. It does show an optional vertical pull mechanism that could be purchased and installed on the engine, but mine didn't need it. Maybe later ones had the option of electric start, but I don't know when or if they did. I have saved this engine for a dingy when I get one for my larger boat. This engine is amazing -- has been seized when the water impeller failed, and still starts on the second pull, without burning oil. When it seized, it cooked the plastic oil filler plate and fuel pump spacer, causing major oil leaks, but still got me home between seizing up, cooling down, and starting up again, only to seize up again. Still runs great.

Brian, My Honda 100 9.9hp is a 1883 model

and as Pat said my manual does'nt show anything in the way of electric starting. My motor usually starts on the first pull so there has never been much need for the electric starter. Ray

Thanks Ray and Patrick

In my manual, there is a list of accessories and electric start in listed as sort of generic item, but in the detail section there isn't any electric start option--I think you have confirmed this. Thanks for your help. BTW, my motor is reliable and runs like it will run (forever??) Electric start would be a nice option, as the motor sits low and is just awkward to get a good angle to pull. Maybe the vertical pull adaptor would be a good alternative or better yet-- a newer unit that has electic start (hint for Santa) Thanks again!
