Well I watched the video by D-Ray and figured it was pretty simple and I should learn how to do it. The shift linkage was 10mm so you need two wrenches. My 2001 Honda 9.9D had five (10mm) bolts holding the lower end on, four in plane view and one under the cavitation plate by the prop that you need a socket for removal. A couple taps with a rubber mallet and the lower unit was off. Four 10mm bolts on the pump housing and I had the cover off. The picture below shows the impeller with two broken vanes and the repair kit from the local Honda dealer.
I had new impeller, key way, O-ring, and gasket in the kit so I cleaned and replaced all these parts. Putting it together was a bit of a challenge to get the impeller onto the key way with everything together in the pump cover. I had to slide them on piece by piece making sure the orientation was proper. I had fit the pieces together several times before placing it on the shaft just so I was positive it would go smoothly. Because the impeller is a little offset, it took a little time to align it, but then it slid into place. A little Tef-gel on the bolts and it was together.
Sliding the lower unit back on took several attempts even after using a flashlight to make sure there was plenty of room to align the shaft, pump tube, and shift linkage. Once it lines up it goes pretty easy. A little Tef-gel on five bolts and connect the shift linkage, all done.
