Honda 9.9 Outboard

Have just purchased, but not mounted, a 2004 Honda 9.9 4-stroke x-long shaft with tiller controls for our 1983 O'day 23. The mount is an OEM max 20 HP. If I don't plan to maneuver with it, when the mount is in the up position do I have to remove the tiller? I have an OEM Morse cockpit remote control module, but Honda apparently can't help me with an adapter. Any ideas from you mechanical wizards?

You need to change the mount

If the outboard mount is original, it is not rated for a four stroke engine. It's not just the additional weight of the four stroke that is at issue; its also the additional torque that a four stroke will generate. Your new 9.9 may be within the weight capacity of the original mount, but it could cause serious damage to mount (not to mention your transom). I would especially recommend upgrading to a new mount given the age of the existing piece of equipment: 20 years of use/exposure has undoubtedly weakened the mount and made it even more vulnerable to stress. Check with Rudy at D&R Marine. He has direct replacement mounts that will not require you to redrill the block or the transom.

could you clarify?

I just put a honda9.9 on my Oday 22, and I'm not sure where you are having a problem. I ran all of my controls to the cockpit, and since I do my steering with my tiller I locked the motor in place. I had my motor mount beefed up and locked in place so all I have to do is tilt the motor up when not in use. let me know if I can help with your problem.

Thanks for the reply. I have the same intention as you, just don't know if the existing mount will handle the new Honda. Could you describe/identify make of your mount and how you beefed it up? John

Thanks for the reply Mike. I will call Rudy. The mount that came with the Oday is a two position spring loaded job with angled exterior block and what appears to be painted over bolts and internal block. So it looks OEM, but may well have been after market. Stamped on one side is "max 20 HP", but no manuf. Do you know of a manual or spec sheet on the subject?
