Honda 9.9 on H23.5 has water coming out

I just replaced the Tohatsu 2-stroke on my '93 23.5 with a 2004 Honda 9.9hp 4-stroke (Electric start, long shaft). The motor was new but run 4 hours by the dealer in their break-in tank. Really runs nice and moves the boat well. However, as the boat gets over about 5 kts, water begins leaking/shooting out of the seam between the upper and lower cases on the motor. I tried running up the rpm at the dock with the motor in neutral. The tell tell stream increases in velocity as you would expect, but no water comes out between the cases in that situation. It seems to be dependent on the speed of the boat. One thought I had was that I may have the motor a little too low in the water. I think that Honda vents exhaust gas on the front side of the shaft when in reverse and it may be that the water flow at over 5 kts is enought to push water up the lower case and out the seam? I lifted the upper case and had no water up there. Anyone with similar experience with the Honda. I'd like to make sure I'm not hurting anything when that is going on.

Mine is the same

My 9.9 Honda does the same thing, I contacted the dealer and they said it is normal. They told me not to worry about it. I have had my motor for 2yrs no problems. Dave

This may be a dumb question but...

You are aware that the honda is water cooled and the exhaust water from the water pump shoots downward out of the top case? Or are you describing a second water source seperate from the water pump?

Thanks Dave

Thanks Dave, I suspected it was just water entering the lower portion of the case and coming up to the seam under the pressure of the water flow off the stern. Good to hear you checked it out with the dealer.

No this is something altogether different

Yeah, I'm aware of the cooling system. As I mentioned, the tell-tell water stream (they do that so you can tell the water pump is working) from the upper case behaves as you'd expect. This water shoots out from the seam between the upper and lower case and appears to be soley dependent on the speed of the boat, not the rpm of the motor.

does it do it underway with the motor off and down

? that will tell you for sure.

I'll try that.

I haven't tried that. Good idea though just as a check. I'll give it a go this weekend. RM

You can rev the motor in neutral?

My 1995H23.5 came with a 1995 Honda 9.9 4-stroke electric start long shaft. In neutral, there is a limiter in the throttle somewhere that stops it from revving up at all. You're stuck with idle speed. Some folks here have filed down the stop that does this, but I'm just curious. Do you figure Honda removed this limiter on the new models? Oh, another test you could try if your dock will take it: while tied up, put it in gear and throttle up. This will tell you if it's the boat moving through the water as expected, or the internal mechanics of the shaft, cooling system, etc.
