I've just started shopping for a 4 stroke 9.9 or 15 HP outboard. Has anyone found a good buy out there. So far I'm not having much luck on the internet.

Insurance hint

Check with your insurance befire you buy. Some insurance companies will put you into another rate class if you have an engine > 10hp.

Vote for Honda 9.9

Hi JK, I have the Honda 9.9 on my 260. It pushes us along at 6.2kts at full speed and its fairly quiet. I know its not cheap, but from what I've seen and read it is a very reliable motor. PS. Get the extra long shaft... Jim SV Java

Would not recommend Evinrude/Johnson

For what it is worth I bought a brand new Johnson 9.9 hp 4 stroke in 1995. It ran well for about two years of very light use, then it was nothing but trouble. I had to make one expensive repair after another and finally gave up this year after over a thousand dollars in repairs. The last breakdown was a biggie, a shattered timing pulley and a crack in one cylinder wall. Just bought a new Honda 9.9...I'm hoping it works better. The Johnson will make a very nice doorstop. Honda prices

We just bought a 8 HP Honda 4-stroke outboard in Canada. The best prices I found in US were at this web site: http://www.yamahadiscountprices.com/hondamotorspecs.html (main page is http://www.yamahadiscountprices.com/bf15_99.html) We got ours at Cycle Workd in Toronto. Found them on the web at http://members.home.net/jbwiese/cycle_world.htm. Saved about $800.00 over US price. They do not ship single items to US. We needed to get away anyhow, so the trip to pick it up became a mini-vacation. The four strokes are a bit heavier than 2-strokes so plan accordingly. Good luck.
