hi folks, does anyone out there have any pics/info on extending the gear shift lever on my 89' honda bf8ah motor on my 85'mac25. i have seen sumner's mod but his is a 26 & is different from mine. i attempted one out of a pvc elbow with a ball on the end of it for a handle but it kept falling from neutral to forward. can the shifting mechanism be adjusted ? my manual doesn't show anything helpful. any info would be greatly appreciated !
thanks,
mick

I don't have pictures, but a number pf years ago I made a gear shift extender for my bf8 by wandering about in the Colorado forest looking for a piece of jack pine branch with a nice curve. I drilled a hole in the big end so it would fit with the right amount of pressure, varnished it up and found it to work perfectly for years. It did eventually start cracking due to weather exposure and I dressed it up with marlinspike cord work to recover the hole dimension. The weight is causing it to fall so it needs to be light.

Was it the weight or the angle of your setup that caused it to slip in to gear? I don't have the same engine on my 22 but my lighter weight setup has not done that yet but I could see that happening if I had more weight on it leaning forward...thus shifting in to forward gear. I made mine out of an old aluminum handicap walker and it all very easily comes apart to save space when stowing....most of all it's strong, very light, won't rust and looks better than PVC IMHO. Took me 1/2 hour to make.

thanks for the picture of your shifter setup ! my honda bf8ah has the shifter coming more or less straight out so neutral & forward has more weight on it, which makes it fall down into forward. i don't know if the shifting mechanism can be adjusted to firm it up or not but i'm going to check it this week. we just got back to puerto vallarta ( where the boat is being stored ) from the us where we have been for the last 6 months. thanks for the reply & i'll post my outcome on the forum !

Your welcome and good luck with it, I'm sure you will figure out adding tension somehow...either mechanical or rigging up a bungee or something!
