We are considering the purchase of a Honda 8 "Classic" 4 stroke outboard for our '89 Cat 22. It is considerably lighter than the new BF8. Anybody with experience (good or bad) w/ this kicker out there? Funny thing, Honda does not seem to push this engine on its web site nor catalogue despite their manufacturing it up to this year at least. Additionally, what have people done with the motor bracket if going with a heavier engine? Thank -You.

My current dilemna

I have the classic (1999) Honda 8 on my 1986 C22. It came with the boat when I bought it. The standard engine mount was not adequate and required too much effort. The Honda weighs 82 pounds. I purchased the double spring engine mount from Catalina Direct and it handles the motor very well. I think Gauer Marine sells the same mount, perhaps for less. One the plus side the Honda starts the first pull, is quiet, powerful, clean and can generate a charging current for your battery. On the other hand even 82 pounds seems like a lot to have hanging off the transom. I am thinking of selling mine and going with a Nissan/Tohatsu 2-stroke 3.5 hp that weighs 27 pounds. I know I would be giving up power but I sail in a lake so no current to deal with and it would take 55 lbs off the back of the boat I see quite a few C22s with the Honda 8 around here so they are popular and I can vouch for its quality.

Honda 8 heavy and overkill

Hi tommy - I tend to agree with Randy. If my boat didn't have to large engine on it already, I'd consider purchasing a smaller, lighter, less expensive engine for a C22. 8hp certainly would work on your boat, but it's more power than you need and weighs a lot more. Just my 2 cents. Best, Trevor

OB for Cat 22

I would go with a simple two stroke 8 hp...I had an Evinrude on my 22. You need that much power in a storm to get home, I found out for sure one time. The 4 stoke is just so damned big and heavy...I can't see that much motor on that poor little OB bracket.

Motor size

I use a Nissan 3.5 2 stroke for my 22. It works great even in wind and current. The best part is it is very light and easy to remove/install.

6 hp nissan

I bought a 6hp nissan four cycle after debating various outboards for my 1989 C22. I have used it for a one month cruise in Northwest and found it a good overall choice. It only weighs 55lbs,has a long shaft and an alternator. I think Honda or yamaha have an edge over the nissan as far as quietness and smoothness but are just too heavy for C22.
