Does anyone have experience with the Honda 8 Horse long shaft on a H26? I am looking at a 2000 manual start with an alternator for battery charging while underway. I have a Merc 8 Horse now and like it but no alternator.

not a real alternator...

The so called alternator is an additional stator winding or two, about enough to keep the battery charged and very little else.

I had a 7.5 hp long shaft and it was a good motor: dependable, quiet, less pollution, started good. Only complaint is that they are heavy.

Honda 9.9 on H26

I have a Honda 9.9 with an extra long shaft. It's quiet, fuel efficient and reliable. Mine also has an electric start which I truely value. You'll have to judge for yourself, but with in the Gulf of Mexico with a 9.9 HP and bucking a strong current and head wind, my top speed was only 3 knots. I was sure glad I had the extra power of a 9.9. I fear an 8 HP might have been a little puny for me on those occasional high demand days. BrianW

I am confused. Why do you run the engine dry? Isn't that the absolute worst thing to do to your water impeller? not to metnion - the water should drain out of an outboard stored vertical, anyway

Sorry I wasn't clear

I meant run the carb dry. Since the fuel switch over to e-10, the carb can gum up if fuel is left sitting in it. I have had no problems since I started doing that. I learned that the hard way after having to have my carb rebuilt.

Honda 8 extra long shaft on H26

The extra long can drag in the water a bit. I put a shimmy in on the mount to get it a little higher to an acceptable level. I also rope it up with a line across opening which catches on rear of engine housing in the out of water position as last catch is too difficult to catch. The 2001 that I have just fits in the motor soace when up. Long shaft would probalby be better.

I just switched my 1999 Honda 9.9

For a 2007 9.9. My main reason for switching was for the extra long shaft length (25in). but it also has a larger alternator. It is rated at 12 amps output and it will put 11 amps into the battery when the battery is not fully charged. That may not seem like much, but compared to the older motor that put out 4.5 amps max that is a big difference. The control cables also mount inside the cowling for a much cleaner installation that doesn't hit the transom of the boat when the motor is tilted up compared to the old motor.

Thanks for the info

Folks - Thanks for all the info - sounds like I should stick with my Merc 8 horse and a solar charger for the batteries.
