Does anybody out there have the new 2hp Honda fourstroke outboard? I was wondering how powerful it was and how fast would it push my 71/2' dingy with two people aboard. Also, how long does the fuel tank last?(one hour etc.) After you purchased 2hp did you wish you bought the 5hp instead? I like the idea that the 2hp weighs only 28lb compare to the 5hp that is almost 60lb. Any information would be great. Thank you John Mesa

Do you really need a 4-stroke?

I've go a Johnson 4HP 2-stroke that pushes my 9.5ft HPIF Zodiac dink to close to planing speed. (Close, but not quite there-I bought a 6HP on E-bay, which does plane it). It also will power my C27 at about 4-4.5 knots in calm water, if it needs to be an "auxiliary to the auxiliary" in case the C27's main motor ( a 15HP Johnson) quits. The 4HP weighs about the same as your 2HP Honda-about 28 lbs. My 6HP weighs about 55, and pushes the 27 at over 5 knots (hull speed is 6.2 knots). If you want a good power-to-weight ratio, 2 stroke is the only way to go. If you want good gas mileage (the 2 stokes are thirsty-the 6HP uses about 1/2 GPH planing the dink) the 4 stroke is the way to go.

I got a Honda 2 hp

I just bought the Honda 2 hp and I am quite pleased. I wanted to push an Avon 9 ft, no floor, all tube inflatable. Without a floor my inflatable will not plane. At about a third throttle the first mate and I are moving about 5 knots. That is as fast as that no floor will go. Increasing the throttle make the motor strain more but the RPMs do not wind out. The prop does not have the right pitch for a “slow” ride. I have just emptied my first tank and do not have an accurate run time. It is a little louder that I would think a four stroke should be. It uses regular gas, not premix. That is a bother, as now I have to carry and keep track of two kinds of gas on the boat. A good feature is that it is air-cooled, no water pump or salt water going through the engine. Holding 28 pounds at arms length (I have to reach out over the tube) to set it on a dink bracket is not a light duty task. I would not be able to do it with 50 pounds. I have not tried to do it in waves and wind at anchor. Even with 28 pounds I might have to set up a winch system to lower the engine to my inflatable.

Honda 2hp

I also have an air cooled 2hp 4stroke and the air cooling is the reason for the extra noise (remember the VW's - I drove them for years). The power is sufficient for us in a small dingy (8'6") most of the time but I have wished for a bit more when fighting wind, waves, and tides. The centrifugal clutch is nice for one hand operation but it takes a little getting used to trying to feel when it will kick in or out. Stan "Christy Leigh" c320 #656

Diddo on the 4hp 2 stroke

I have a ten foot aluminum dingy and my 4hp Johnson 2 stroke is plenty powerful. I also have a 2 stroke 15hp Johnson for the catalina 27. I want to get a four stroke 15 HP but need to close the hole in the stern to mount a decent outboard bracket but I haven't come across anyone who has done this. Well good luck.
