I have the 2...

nice engine. I like it because it is light. You have to really crack the oil cap down or it could vibrate off and the oil comes out.

Great Little Engine

I had a Honda 4-cycle 2hp for 5 yrs. It was a GREAT little engine...lighweight, good on gas and moved our 8' inflatable just fine. Also, it was easy to lift off the dink and store it on the stern of the mother yacht.

Own one

bought the 2 HP for a couple of reasons: 4-stroke; lightweight, easy to haul around with one hand (the other for myself); air cooling; reputation/dependability. The speed-dependent clutch takes some getting used to but have been very pleased. Pushes our 81/2' inflatable at about 5 kts, according to our hand-held GPS, with myself and the Admiral onboard. Doesn't see much use but has always started and is easy on the gas.

Check out

Also check out the Suzuki DF 2.5hp & the Tohatsu/Mercury/Nissan 2, 2.5 & 3.5hp motors (I list them together because they are all basically the same motors and built by Tohatsu). They are all fairly light run smooth and are much quieter than the Honda. My friend Gail has the Honda 2 and has had a few problems with it including many rusting and corroding parts such as the throttle cable. My favorite small motor is the Suzuki DF 2.5. The Suzuki 2.5hp is a nice, light, quiet (water cooled) little motor. If you're not planing the hull the realistic difference between a 2hp and a 4hp will be almost zilch as both the 2hp and 4hp will push the boat at displacement speed yet most 2-2.5hp motors are lighter in weight than a 4hp. I have a 4hp Johnson two stroke and have tried the Suzuki DF 2.5 and noticed very little speed difference. It will be my next motor unless of course I can find another used Johnson two stroke.. Here's a list of the available small light 4 strokes: Suzuki DF-2.5hp - Weight 29 Lbs. - Warranty 3 Years Tohatsu 2hp & 3.5hp - Weight 41 Lbs. - Warranty 3 Years Mercury 2.5hp & 3.5hp - Weight 38 Lbs. - Warranty 3 years (It's basically the same motor as the Tohatsu/Nissan so the weight specs raise some questions) Honda 2 - Weight 27 Lbs. 3 Year Warranty (The only air cooled motor = louder) Yamaha 2.5 Weight 37 Lbs. Warranty 3 Years Nissan 2 & 3.5hp Weight 41 Lbs. Warranty 3 Years

I have the Honda BF2 also

and like too. Since I'm in salt water I thought the air cooling would be an advantage. Starts on one pull. Yes it is louder than others.

My experience with the BF2

A friend of mine had one hanging of the back of his Beach Comber ketch (26' I think). He had just moved his boat and I grabbed the boat as he pulled along the dock. He wanted to warm up his BF2 while I sat there holding on to the boat. Well I guess it slipped his mind that the boat hadn't been tied up yet and he started to advance the throttle... I came pretty close to ending up in the drink. I hung on for dear life. He had his diesel in neutral with the engine running so I guess he couldn't hear me. Finally he heard my yelling and he cut the throttle right before I was about to skid off the dock. Man, that is one strong little engine *yks I wouldn't mind having one as an emergency engine on my boat ;D Manny

I've had the Honda 2 for a couple years and

have been very pleased, it was the ONLY 4 stroke under 4 Hp. available new in California when I needed a new engine. Friend recently got the 2.5 Suzuki and it seems like an excellent little engine that is a couple hundred less than the Honda. A lot of the racers here use the Honda to push their J boats out to the start line.
