Anchoring in 40kt winds over mem day wknd flipped the dingy and 2 hp honda outboard. It only had about 10 hrs on it. Got it running again, but everyone is saying it's not a matter of when it quits. It will quit. So, now the 2.3 hp is making it's debut in the U.S. Anybody know anything about Honda's "new" 2.3 hp outboard? They've been around outside the US for several yrs but cannot find any reviews (that make sense)......Should I buy another 2 while I can or go for the 2.3?

Why will it quit, because it got dunked? If it was carefully cleaned and rinsed, oil and fuel thoroughly flushed, and re-greased where required, and ran long and hard to run it out good, why would it quit? Im sure the manual explains what all needs to be done after dunking. The only thing I might do extra is pop the flywheel to make sure everything up there is clean and dry and lubed where needed.

I don't need a crystal ball to tell you that the engine will fail but a tought prediction would be to even approximate when. These engines are built for the marine environment and some of the older ones may have suffered from sea salt and getting wet more than yours may have seen in the single dunk. If the electronics were dried out and the engine was flushed and new oil and grease were added, there is no reason why it would not have a normal useful life. I would pay special attention to the carburator to prevent rust from developing prematurely but other than that the best remedy is regular use. Letting any engine seat can kill it prematurely.

OK, but it's a matter of when. I also dunked my 2 HP Honda, when I turtled my 15-foot Precision (don't ask!). I took it home, changed the oil 3 times until no water left and kept on using it. Never had any issues. This was freshwater. With saltwater, more attention might be needed.

Make sure you spray inside each electrical connector with WD-40 to help displace any remaining water if you intend to keep running it.

How many of those "everyones" had motors that went through Katrina? I can tell you a lot of those dunked outboards down here are working fine now. As stated, get it well flushed, greased, etc., and your outboard should have a long useful life.

Otherwise, ship it down here and I'll "dispose" of it for you. ;-)

Interesting.... The Honda dealers say that the electronics "will" fail prematurely...question of when.....

I guess you need to compare how much a new motor will cost vs the cost of cleaning up the dunked one, knowing eventually it will fail. Again, big question of when it will fail. Do you know any good independent mechanics (not Honda dealers)?
