cheap sun awning

Get 2 expandable tent poles - these are available at any sporting goods store that has camping equipment. Each one is 4 poles - about 18 or 24 inches - that fit into each other held in place with an elastic cord. (You can also use heavy duty PVC, but it doesn't store as nice) Use one to hold each end of a drop cloth/tarp. Tie one end to the mast (connect line at middle of tarp - pole holds tarp out). Tie the other to the backstay. A few lines to the lifelines keeps it in place. You can do all kinds of variations on this.

I think I have a few ideas to try....

Thanks guys... I have a few ideas now... I will have to get some cheap fabric to prototype my design in the spring. If it works out I will spring for some sunbrella fabric. Should I be able to sew the Sunbrella fabric on a normal machine? Any advice on types of thread? Ok a light color? White? (gets dirty easy) maybe Grey? Thanks, Jeremy
